Softball player of the week (4/4): Denton Guyer's Suzette Palmer

What she did: Palmer was 4-for-4 with two doubles, two home runs and six RBIs and also pitched a five-hitter in a 19-2 win over Justin Northwest. She then went 3-for-3 with three RBIs and pitched a three-hit shutout in a 14-0 win over Coppell.

Who is she? A sophomore pitcher.

The stats: In her first year as the No. 1 pitcher for Denton Guyer, Palmer is 18-5 with a 1.35 ERA. She is hitting .443 with a team-high six home runs, and she has 34 RBIs and has scored 25 runs in 24 games. Guyer (19-5, 7-2) moved up from 4A to 5A this season, but it’s ranked No. 20 in the state and is tied for second place in District 7-5A.

She said it: “Last year I wasn’t starting, so taking a leadership role [this year], that was a big thing, helping my team out.’’

Coach said it: “As a sophomore she’s made a tremendous leap from her freshman year as far as her patience at the plate, and I think that’s translating into some really good numbers offensively.” — Keith Medford
