Baseball player of the week (4/4): Coppell's Connor Foltyn
What he did: On Tuesday, Foltyn went 3-for-3, hitting a grand slam and scoring three runs in Coppell’s 23-5 win over Keller. On Friday, he held Keller Central to two hits and no runs over six innings, getting the win for No. 3 Coppell.
Who is he? A 6-0, 195-pound junior left-handed pitcher and first baseman
The stats: Batting .362 with 4 HRs, 25 RBIs and 13 runs scored; 5-0, 34 Ks, 3.07 ERA in 292/3 innings
He said it: “In my second at-bat, he threw a slider for his first pitch, moved me off the plate. I kinda knew that in the next at-bat [his grand slam], he’d come back to that.”
Coach said it: “As our only lefty, we need him to be lights out. And he's been very consistent, especially for a junior." — Don English
Did you know? Coppell’s recent successes at the plate might be because of English splitting up JV and varsity practices last week. Foltyn said he got 60 to 80 more cuts against pitching in practice.
