No. 1 Plano survives a big test

Ryan McCarthy pitched 52/3 innings to get the win and also homered and had two RBIs to lead the Plano baseball team to a 3-2 win over Plano West on Friday.

Eric Gilstrap also homered for Plano (18-2, 7-0 District 8-5A), the No. 1 team in SportsDay’s 5A area rankings. Hunter Raley earned a save, pitching 11/3 hitless innings of relief.


Tight race in 8-5A as state powers clash

Rachel Edwards went 2-for-2 with a home run and two RBIs to lead Flower Mound, the state’s ninth-ranked 5A softball team, to a 6-1 win over eighth-ranked Hebron. Coupled with 12th-ranked Plano East’s 7-2 win over fifth-ranked Flower Mound Marcus, there is a three-way tie for second in District 8-5A, with Marcus, Flower Mound and Plano East all 5-3 in district and three games behind Plano. Hebron, a state semifinalist last season, is in fifth at 4-4.

Rachel Scott, who has committed to Texas, and Courtney Watts each went 2-for-3 with two RBIs for Plano East against Marcus.

No. 1 Highland Park wins slugfest

Ryan Romo and Chris McDade homered as the Highland Park baseball team, ranked No. 1 in the state in 4A, beat McKinney, 13-8. Hobie Harris homered twice for McKinney. There were 25 hits in the game. Highland Park is 22-2 overall and 7-0 in District 10-4A.



Robert Elles, Red Oak: Pitched a no-hitter, struck out nine and had two RBIs in an 11-0 win against West Mesquite.

Jordan Foley, The Colony: The Central Michigan signee struck out 16 in an 11-2 victory over Denton.

Roberto Hernandez, North Dallas: Had a double, home run and five RBIs in a 19-0 win over South Oak Cliff.

Ryan O’Hearn, Frisco Wakeland: Went 3-for-4 with two home runs and three RBIs as the state’s ninth-ranked 4A team beat Carrollton R.L. Turner, 11-0.

Aaron Warren, Arlington Martin: Hit a grand slam as Martin moved into a tie for first place in District 4-5A with a 9-3 win vs. Fort Worth Paschal.


Victoria Bice, Mesquite: Threw a two-hitter as Mesquite gained sole possession of first in 11-5A with a 4-1 win vs. Mesquite Horn, the No. 5-ranked 5A team in the area.

Erin Brennan, Lake Highlands: Threw a second straight no-hitter as Lake Highlands improved to 16-0 with a 20-0 win vs. Samuell.

Lisa Licata, McKinney: Had three RBIs in an 8-6 win over Wylie, the No. 9 team in the 4A-others area rankings.

Brooke McCarroll, Forney: Hit two home runs and had five RBIs as the state’s ninth-ranked 4A team beat Mesquite Poteet, 15-0. Macie Tillery pitched a no-hitter.

Suzette Palmer, Denton Guyer: Threw a three-hitter and was 3-for-3 with three RBIs as the state’s No. 20 5A team beat Coppell, 14-0.



19: Strikeouts for Royse City’s Alicia Pille, a Kansas signee, in a 2-0 win over Mount Pleasant in softball.

John Curtiss, Southlake Carroll: The Texas signee pitched a two-hit shutout and struck out five as Southlake Carroll, the state’s eighth-ranked 5A team, beat Denton Guyer, 3-0, and remained alone in first place in District 7-5A.


Meagan Michele, South Grand Prairie: The UT-Arlington signee homered twice, doubled and had three RBIs as the state’s 19th-ranked 5A team beat Mansfield, 8-3.
