Baseball/Softball Replay: Highland Park downs McKinney North

No. 2 Plano defeats No. 1 Plano East

In a battle between SportsDay’s top two area softball teams, No. 2 Plano held off No. 1 Plano East, 3-2, in a key District 8-5A game.

Plano East led, 1-0, until Plano starting pitcher Katherine Batey hit a solo home run in the fourth inning to tie the game. Batey added a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning for the go-ahead RBI to make it 2-1 Plano. Later in the inning, freshman Tori Seasor singled in Jill Holub for Plano (21-3, 6-0), which has only one starting senior but is ranked No. 2 in the state and No. 19 in the nation.

Plano East (20-3, 4-2), No. 3 in the state and No. 4 in the nation, added a run in the seventh before Batey (21-3) shut the door. Batey allowed five hits and a walk while striking out three.

BASEBALL

Nick Hendrix, Arlington Martin: Struck out 10 to pitch a shutout and added three hits in 5-0 victory over Arlington Lamar.

Jordan Zangarine, Rowlett: Was 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBIs in 8-0 victory over Garland.

Hunter Lockwood, Hurst L.D. Bell: Senior catcher and Oklahoma signee had two doubles and two RBIs in 13-0 win over Irving MacArthur. He leads all area players this season with 11 home runs.

Jonathan Dailey, Duncanville: Was 5-for-5 with two RBIs, a stolen base and pitched a complete game in 12-4 win over Mansfield Timberview.

Jake Bateman, W.T. White: Was 3-for-4 with a home run, double and four RBIs as W.T. White improved to 3-1 in District 9-5A.

SOFTBALL

Samantha Kennedy, Mesquite: Was 4-for-4 with two doubles, a triple, three RBIs, three runs scored and a stolen base in her team's 10-0 win over Longview.

Shelby Hedrick, North Forney: Pitched a two-hit shutout and hit two home runs in a 15-0 win over Ferris.

Paige Garner, Justin Northwest: Was 4-for-4 with a double and three RBIs in 12-2 victory over Saginaw.

Alisa Hamilton, Wylie: Junior centerfielder was 3-for-3 with two doubles, four RBIs and two steals in 15-3 win over Richardson Pearce.

Amber Sather, Kennedale: Was 3-for-4 with two doubles, a home run and six RBIs in Kennedale's 15-1 victory over Hillsboro.

SPOTLIGHT

50 in a row for Poteet

Mesquite Poteet’s baseball team defeated Lancaster, 20-2, to win its 50th consecutive district game. Poteet’s last district loss came in 2007 to Highland Park. Chad Young had three RBIs to help Poteet (14-5) move to 6-0 in District 15-4A.

McCoy perfect

Frisco Centennial ace Shelby McCoy pitched a perfect game in her team’s 10-0 District 9-4A victory over Carrollton Newman Smith. McCoy struck out 13 to give her 25 strikeouts in two games this week. McCoy is now 17-5 this season.

Lacy with a walk-off

Grand Prairie’s Devante Lacy, a standout junior wide receiver in football, had a walk-off, two-out, two-run home run to give the Gophers a 4-2 win over Midlothian. Leadoff hitter Manuel Sanchez hit a two-out, game-tying home run in the seventh to extend the inning. Pitcher Waylon Davis struck out 11, including five of the last six batters, for the win.

Hillcrest freshman Julia Gross hasn’t wasted her bases-loaded opportunities of late. For the second consecutive game, Gross connected for a grand slam in Hillcrest’s 16-2 victory over Conrad. Gross’ big hits have helped Hillcrest start 5-0 in District 12-4A.
