Top-ranked Highland Park wins again

Jake Howeth, who was a district MVP in football this season as a quarterback and defensive back, fell a triple shy of the cycle in leading the Highland Park baseball team to a 5-2 win over Wylie on Friday.

Howeth went 3-for-3 with a single, double, home run and three RBIs for Highland Park (18-2, 3-0 District 10-4A), the state’s top-ranked 4A team. Matt Wilson pitched a four-hitter and struck out seven for Highland Park.

Wylie scored twice in the top of the first, but Highland Park tied the score on a two-run homer by Chris McDade in the bottom of the inning. Howeth singled in a run in the third, then hit a two-run homer in the fifth.



Cody Gunter, Flower Mound: Homered during a six-run sixth inning to help Flower Mound, the state’s sixth-ranked 5A team, beat Flower Mound Marcus, 7-6.

Hunter Hargrove, Mansfield: Was 3-for-5 with a home run and five RBIs in a 15-2 win over Duncanville.

Chad Young, Mesquite Poteet: Pitched a three-hitter and struck out 13 as Poteet (12-5, 4-0 District 15-4A) beat Corsicana, 1-0.

Austin Schotts, Frisco Centennial: Homered twice in a 10-2 victory over Frisco Liberty.

Conner Smith, Mansfield Legacy: Pitched a two-hit shutout, struck out 10 and also doubled and homered to lead Legacy (14-4, 3-0 District 5-5A) to a 3-0 win over Midlothian.

Ty Washington, Plano East: Hit a game-winning, fifth-inning homer as Plano East (13-5-1, 2-0 District 8-5A) beat Plano West, 3-2. Brandon Johnson threw a three-hitter for Plano East.


Summer Davila, Waxahachie: Was 4-for-4 with three RBIs and three runs scored in a 14-4 win over West Mesquite.

Paige Mongillo, Celina: Doubled and tripled as the state’s top-ranked 3A team beat Commerce, 16-1.

Rockwall-Heath vs. Frisco Wakeland baseball, 1 p.m. Saturday at Frisco’s Dr Pepper Ballpark: This is a rematch of last year’s Class 4A Region II final series, which Wakeland won. Both teams opened the season in the 4A state rankings, and Rockwall-Heath is currently No. 6. Rockwall-Heath’s Jovan Hernandez tied a state record earlier this season by extending his hitting streak to 42 games before the streak ended.

Power surges

Darien McLemore hit two home runs and had five RBIs as the Southlake Carroll baseball team rallied from a 6-0 deficit to beat Justin Northwest, 18-8. Kyle Bailey and Ryan Lowe also homered for Carroll. … The Plano baseball team got home runs from Matt Johnson, Ryan McCarthy and Ryan Thomas in a 4-3 win over Hebron.



Adam Toth, Coppell: The Baylor signee hit one of Coppell’s three doubles as the state’s third-ranked 5A team beat Keller Fossil Ridge, 6-2.


Kayla English, Fort Worth Christian: The Dayton signee pitched a five-hit shutout and struck out 11 in a 1-0 win over Justin Northwest.


7: Extra-base hits, including three home runs, for the Colleyville Heritage baseball team in an 11-10 win over Euless Trinity.

3: Home runs hit by the W.T. White baseball team in a 14-3 win over Garland.

28: Hits in the Haltom-Irving Nimitz baseball game, a 10-9 Haltom win.
