What you need to know: Boys basketball regional playoffs
Class 5A, Region I
North Crowley vs. Marcus: FM Marcus has been one of the most impressive teams all season, and the Marauders certainly haven't slowed in the playoffs. After a tough victory against Duncanville, Marcus blew out Lewisville. North Crowley has been one of the state's top teams all year and has guards good enough to push Marcus. But no team has beat Marcus in a fast-paced offensive game.
Cedar Hill vs. Arlington Bowie: Bowie has been a solid all year but not many expected the Volunteers to advance to a regional final. Cedar Hill, with its tough defense and solid inside play, should defeat Bowie and reach the regional final. Marcus, though, is definitely the favorite to win and return to Austin.
Class 5A, Region II
Garland Lakeview Centennial vs. The Woodlands and DeSoto vs. Dekaney: No reason why Lakeview Centennial and DeSoto shouldn’t advance to the regional final. If they do, it will be an exciting matchup of top-five teams. Lakeview Centennial can run, as can DeSoto, though Eagles could try to slow the tempo. Both teams have excellent leadership.
Class 4A, Region I
Denton Ryan vs. Arlington Heights and The Colony vs. Trimble Tech: Area teams only in this region, and these should be good matchups. FW Arlington Heights is clearly the favorite, with the best record and ranking and a 2-0 record against Trimble Tech. The Colony has state-tournament experience from last year and is itching to get back after having to vacate its state tournament appearance.
Class 4A, Region II
Lincoln vs. Jacksonville and Kimball vs. Bastrop: Let's face it. The people in our area are really waiting for the possible Saturday matchup between Kimball and Lincoln. The teams have split so far this season, with Lincoln winning by double digits and Kimball pulling out the second game. Here's where it all matters. Lincoln or Kimball. Whichever team makes it out this region could certainly win state.
