Wixon: Are you not entertained? Crazy first round could lead to memorable postseason

It was only the first week in what South Grand Prairie hopes will be a long playoff ride, so coach Brent Whitson wasn't sure if he should call Friday's win over Euless Trinity historic.

"But in SGP country, it is certainly historical," he said. "No one thought we had a chance."

Maybe we weren't thinking straight.

Trinity was undefeated, playing on its home field and hadn't lost in the first round since 2003. But South Grand Prairie had a regular-season schedule that included seven playoff teams, six of which are still kickin' in the second round.

Still, South Grand Prairie's 24-21 victory over Trinity was the lead story on one of the wildest playoff weekends in years. And looking at this week's matchups, the second round could be even more memorable.

Let's start with last week, when two defending champs were ousted.

Ennis, which won the 5A Division II title last year, led its first-round game by nine points before a stunning finish. Hallsville scored a touchdown with 2:37 left, recovered the ensuing onside kick, and then set up a field goal to win 24-23.

Cedar Hill started its drive toward a third straight title with a double whammy. The Longhorns had to play fellow powerhouse Southlake Carroll in the first round - and on the Dragons' home field because of a UIL pilot program that allowed the higher 6A seed to host a first-round game. Carroll and Cedar Hill finished second in their respective districts, but the teams fell into Division I and Division II in a way that made Carroll the higher seed.

Cedar Hill lost 37-33. The Longhorns finished the season with nine wins, including four over teams that are still in the playoffs, and with two losses by a combined seven points.

Other first-round highlights included Rockwall's Caleb Broach, Wylie East's Eno Benjamin, Rowlett's Kobe Morrow and Mansfield's Kennedy Brooks rushing for 250 yards or more. They were the top running backs of the week, but the most dramatic run of the first round was by a receiver.

It came on a kickoff return. With Arlington Lamar trailing Abilene by one point with 16 seconds left, Draven Cantly took the ball 93 yards for the winning touchdown.

What a week. And it could get even better in round two.

There are three great rematches from the regular season, with Mansfield playing Flower Mound Marcus (6A Division II), Wylie East taking on Mesquite Poteet (5A Division I) and Grapevine Faith and Parish Episcopal (TAPPS Division II) playing for the second time in three weeks.

Jesuit (10-1), which allows only 14 points per game, takes on Rockwall (8-3), an offensive juggernaut that averages 48. South Grand Prairie (7-4) gets another shot at an undefeated team, this time facing Denton Ryan (11-0). And there's the annual matchup of Allen and DeSoto, which will meet in the playoffs for the fourth straight year.

If DeSoto (6-5) knocks off Allen (11-0), which has a 54-game win streak, it will be one of the most memorable upsets in playoff history.

But it won't be one of the biggest. Allen is Allen, which means dominant, but DeSoto has won four of its last five games, including a victory over the South Grand Prairie team that just beat Trinity.

Let's see ... South Grand Prairie beat Trinity, which beat Carroll, which beat Cedar Hill, which beat South Grand Prairie.

That doesn't make a lot of sense, but it should make people pay attention. Because in high school football, there are few sure things and many reasons to expect the unexpected.
