AUSTIN — Defending state champion Plano West took advantage of the wind in the first half and then held on for a 1-0 victory in a girls Class 5A Region II soccer semifinal against Round Rock on Friday.

Plano West (18-2-4) will play McKinney in the regional final at 11 a.m. Saturday at Round Rock ISD’s Kelly Reeves Athletic Complex. The District 10-5A rivals have met twice this season. Plano West won, 1-0, on Feb. 18, and the teams tied, 0-0, on March 18.

Sophomore Lakyn Pope scored 15 minutes into the game on a rebound off a shot by Ashley Smith from 25 yards out that Round Rock goalie Avery Arndt couldn’t control. The ball took a hard bounce off Arndt and right to Pope, who easily scored on a right-footed shot.

Round Rock (16-6-3) had more chances in the second half with the wind at its back, but couldn’t beat freshman goalie Mariel Gordon, who finished with three saves.

McKinney 2, Kingwood 1: Senior captain Vianei Sanchez scored with 1 minute, 57 seconds remaining to give McKinney (12-5-6) the win in a Region II semifinal.

On the game-winning goal, the ball bounced around the penalty box after a corner kick before Sanchez settled it and took a left-footed shot from just outside the box.

McKinney sophomore Devon Prince tied the score at 1-1 on a curling free kick from 30 yards away with 19:39 remaining.

McKinney trailed for most of the game after Kingwood (21-2-2) took an early lead just 2:03 into the contest. Adriana Suarez easily finished a pass from Esdeina Gonazalez, who made a hard run down the right side of the box before making the cross.

McKinney Boyd 2, The Woodlands 1 (OT): McKinney Boyd goalie Evan Davies made 17 saves to lead his team to an overtime win in a 5A Region II semifinal.

Cody Spitzer scored both goals for McKinney Boyd (14-4-6), which ended a 17-game winning streak for The Woodlands (21-1-1). Boyd will play Lake Highlands (22-1-4) at 1 p.m. Saturday at Round Rock ISD’s Kelly Reeves Athletic Complex.

Spitzer scored his second goal with 1 minute, 37 seconds remaining in the first overtime on a corner kick.

The ball bounced around in the box after the initial shot and Spitzer scored on the second rebound.

The Woodlands finished with 33-14 edge in shots, including several close calls late in regulation and in overtime.

Lake Highlands 1, Conroe 0 (SO): After 100 minutes without a goal, Lake Highlands defeated Conroe 4-3 in a shootout to advance to the Class 5A Region II championship game.

The teams were tied, 3-3, after five rounds in the shootout, forcing sudden death. Conroe hit the crossbar on the first shot of the sixth round, while Roberto Lopez hit the game-winning shot into the right corner.

Even though it was going against a strong wind, Lake Highlands controlled possession and had more chances in the first half, outshooting Conroe, 6-3.
