High school soccer playoff roundup: Defending champion Plano West girls shut out Allen

Abby Grace Cooper scored late in the first half and two-time defending state champion Plano West added two insurance goals in the second during a 3-0 win over District 10-5A rival Allen in a Class 5A Region II quarterfinal at McKinney Boyd.

"The first goal for us was a game-changer," Plano West head coach Allie Rogosheske said. "It changed the momentum and it changed our game plan after that."

Cooper scored in the 38th minute of the first half for Plano West (17-2-4), which advanced to the regional semifinals this weekend, as it looks for its second three-peat in the sport.

Ashley Smith scored the second goal for Plano West with 25:56 remaining in the second half. She then assisted with 14:39 left on a goal by Lakyn Pope, who had the assist on Cooper's goal.

Freshman Mariel Gordon pitched the shutout in goal for Plano West.

"For being a freshman, she comes up big for us in big games," Rogosheske said. "I'm impressed with her composure."

During district play, the teams split their matches, with each winning 1-0 on the road.

Highland Park 3, Forney 2 (2OT): Highland Park's Sara Summers scored with four minutes left in the first overtime, pacing her squad to a Class 4A Region II quarterfinal win at Wildcat-Ram Stadium in Richardson.

Highland Park (20-4-1) led for most of the match. Hope Hyde scored twice and assisted on Summers’ goal.

SL Carroll 1, Keller Timber Creek 0: Southlake Carroll's Allie Luna scored with just over 10 minutes remaining, ending the season for Keller Timber Creek in a Class 5A Region I quarterfinal at Northwest ISD Stadium in Justin.

SL Carroll (22-1-1) completed a 3-0 season sweep of Timber Creek with the victory, with all three wins being shutouts.

Wylie East 2, Frisco Wakeland 0: Wylie East moved on to the Class 4A Region II tournament, scoring once in each half to defeat Frisco Wakeland at Eagle-Mustang Stadium in Richardson.

Wylie East (21-1-1) got goals from Valiree Morris and Brittany Jones.

TC Byron Nelson 5, Kennedale 1: Madison Hall had a three-goal night for Trophy Club Byron Nelson, helping her team move on to the Class 4A Region I tournament with a solid victory over Kennedale at Farrington Field in Fort Worth.

TC Byron Nelson (20-2-5) scored quickly in both halves, including a goal just 30 seconds into the second half.

Boys

Coppell 2, Duncanville 0: Defending state soccer champion Coppell cleared a large playoff hurdle, defeating Duncanville in a Class 5A Region I quarterfinal at Birdville Fine Arts Athletic Complex.

Coppell (19-1-2) finished the regular season No. 1 in the final SportsDay area ranking and Duncanville (20-2-2) was No. 3.

Austin Michaelis set up Coppell’s opening goal with a low centering pass from the right. Chris Madden, the target of the pass, one-timed a 6-yard shot into the open left corner of the net in the game’s 18 minute.

Roberto Arguello made it 2-0, scoring in very nearly the same spot in the 31 minute.

FM Marcus 2, Flower Mound 0: Marcus coach John Gall picked up his 250 career win in a Class 5A Region I quarterfinal at Goldsmith Stadium in Lewisville.

FM Marcus (18-1-4) got goals from Trevor Costello and Danny Blaney in the second half.

Lake Highlands 1, Plano West 0: Lake Highlands extended its season to the Class 5A Region I tournament, getting a shutout win over Plano West at Clark Stadium in Plano.

Lake Highlands (18-1-4) got the match-winning strike from Grant Norris.
