Ursuline avenges prior losses to FW Nolan; now in TAPPS state final
HOUSTON — Freshman Madison Haley did all the scoring as Ursuline defeated Fort Worth Nolan, 3-0, in a TAPPS Division I girls soccer state semifinal Friday at Awty International School.
Ursuline will try to win its 24th consecutive state title at 3 p.m. Saturday. The Bears have won all 13 state tournament contests against Nolan.
The loss was just the second in 31 games for Nolan (24-2-5), which had swept the district series against Ursuline (12-7-4).
Friday’s game was scoreless until the 63rd minute, when Haley played a ball while going to the ground that bounced over the head of the Nolan goalkeeper.
Haley struck again in the 74th minute, establishing position in the middle and converting a crossing pass from teammate Kate Hajdu. Ursuline added its final goal three minutes later when Haley beat the goalie to a loose ball and chipped it in.
Bishop Lynch girls 2, Plano John Paul II 1 (2 OT)
Bishop Lynch used a penalty kick goal from Allison Gantner with three minutes left in the second overtime to win a TAPPS Division I semifinal.
Lynch took the lead in the eighth minute when Kaycie Tillman scored off a crossing pass from Taylor Haynes. John Paul II tied the score when Madison Haubner scored on a free kick in the 64th minute, then gained a man advantage when Lynch drew a red card 10 minutes later.
Lynch gained the deciding edge when Tillman was tripped inside the goal box, producing the penalty kick.
John Paul had fewer offensive chances, but remained in contention with a number of good saves by goalkeeper Kendall Wermine.
TCA-Addison boys 2, Laredo St. Augustine 1
Blake Troiani scored the game-winning goal off a free kick in the 47th minute, and Jack Savage also scored as TCA-Addison won a TAPPS Division I semifinal.
Central Catholic 2, Fort Worth Nolan 1 (2 OT)
Danny Fleming scored a golden goal in the second overtime with 1:07 remaining to send San Antonio Central Catholic into the championship round against TCA-Addison.
Colleyville Covenant Christian 2, Houston Cypress Christian 1
Matthew Schwebke scored with less than two minutes left to give Colleyville Covenant the TAPPS Division III state championship. It was the second consecutive state title for Colleyville Covenant, which defeated Cypress Christian, 4-0, in the 2013 final.
Cypress had defended the last of four successive corner kicks taken by Covenant, only to see a clearance attempt roll out to Schwebke. The senior midfielder scored from 20 yards out.
Cody Callahan gave Cypress a 1-0 lead with a goal off a corner kick in the 12th minute. Brooks Friedman tied the score in the opening minute of the second half when he pounced on a loose ball and bounced it over the head of the Cypress keeper.
