TAPPS state soccer roundup: Early goal propels Ursuline into Division I title game

HOUSTON — Katie McHugh scored in the 12th minute off a corner kick from Kennedi Henneberger as Ursuline beat Argyle Liberty Christian, 1-0, in a TAPPS Division I girls soccer state semifinal Friday at Awty International School.

The Bears will play for their 23rd consecutive state championship when they face Houston St. Agnes at 3 p.m. Saturday.

Though they managed just one goal, the Bears threatened multiple times. Kate Hajdu led the Ursuline midfield that control play and provided numerous through passes to attackers McHugh and Grace Hill.

Argyle Liberty’s only scoring chance came in the 14th minute, when it had a goal nullified by an offsides call.

Houston St. Agnes girls 1, Bishop Lynch 0 (SO, 3-2): St. Agnes goalkeeper Claire Lafferty made four shootout saves to lift the Tigers past Bishop Lynch in a Division I semifinal.

Neither team managed a goal through 80 minutes of regulation and two 10-minute overtimes. Even the shootout required an extra round before St. Agnes claimed a 3-2 decision.

St. Agnes had the opening shot in the sixth round and made it count with a goal from Alexis Moreleon. Bishop Lynch missed its chance to tie when Lafferty blocked a shot.

Fort Worth Nolan boys 2, San Antonio Antonian 0: Nolan Catholic scored twice in the second half to win a Division I semifinal. Nolan (15-4-1) advanced to play Bishop Lynch in Saturday's 6 p.m. championship game. The Vikings will be seeking their third consecutive state title.

Anthony Cuccarese put in the first Nolan goal off a corner kick by Grant Muehlstein in the 57th minute. Keagan Angevin took a pass from Barton Holdridge in front of the goal to record the second Vikings score in the 70th minute.

Bishop Lynch boys 3, San Antonio Central Catholic 2: Bishop Lynch scored three times in the first half and then held on to win a Division I semifinal.

Less than two minutes had elapsed when Sung Woo Park scored the first Bishop Lynch goal. Blake Barnes increased the lead to 2-0 with a goal in the fifth minute. Ryan Plugge then scored off a rebound with two seconds left in the first half to send Bishop Lynch into the break with a 3-0 advantage.

Parish Episcopal girls 8, Fort Worth Southwest Christian 0: Senior Natalie Johnston scored four goals to lead the two-time TAPPS Division II state champion to a semifinal win.

Briefly: The Grapevine Faith Christian boys beat Parish Episcopal, 1-0, in a Division II semifinal. … The Colleyville Covenant boys and girls both won Division III semifinals. The Covenant boys shut out Houston St. Thomas Episcopal, 4-0. The Covenant girls beat Austin Veritas, 1-0.
