Longest 5A, 4A girls basketball district winning streaks fall; boys teams land upsets

The area’s two longest Class 5A/4A girls basketball district winning streaks came to an end last weekend, when both Skyline and Lincoln suffered losses.

Skyline, the perennial 5A power, had its 134-game district winning streak snapped by Richardson in a 72-58 loss Friday. That same night, Bryan Adams snapped Lincoln’s 122-game district winning streak in a 64-55 victory.

Skyline’s last district loss was a 58-51 defeat by Bryan Adams on Feb. 1, 2002. It beat Carter in its final district game that season, beginning its streak of 134 consecutive victories.

Lincoln, a 4A state finalist a season ago, hadn’t lost a district game since the 2003 regular season finale against Kimball. Lincoln beat Kimball in a non-district meeting that season, then suffered two district losses to cede the title.

Both Skyline and Lincoln are at risk of failing to win a district championship for the first time in more than a decade.

The longest active 5A/4A district winning streak now belongs to No. 1 Duncanville, which is on a 54-game streak. Duncanville’s last district loss came on Jan. 26, 2010, against Irving MacArthur, which won 67-57 behind 51 combined points from stars Odyssey Sims and Alexis Jones.

Duncanville extended its overall winning streak to 93 games with a 61-36 victory against South Grand Prairie on Tuesday.

Slow starters earn upset: While Irving might not be breaking into the top 10 of the SportsDayHS rankings anytime soon, the Tigers' boys basketball team isn't to be taken lightly. Irving (8-8, 4-2 in 6-5A) upset state-ranked Euless Trinity on Tuesday, coming back from a 17-point deficit after being held scoreless in the first quarter. Despite giving Flower Mound Marcus (18-2) one of its two losses, Irving started slow this season – 3-7 in its first 10 games.

A key reason might be the number of players playing roles on the school’s playoff-bound football team.  Combo guards Michael Coley, Kishion Mitchell and R.J. Wills were receivers on Irving’s 6-5 football team, which finished its season on Nov. 15, the night of Irving’s first basketball game – a loss to Mansfield Legacy.

Flower Mound's Cox living up to hype: Flower Mound sophomore Lauren Cox, the No. 1 2016 recruit in the nation by ESPN's HoopGurlz, is among the area leaders in both points and rebounds this season.

The 6-4 post averages a double-double with 18.6 points and 14.4 rebounds. Those numbers rank her fifth in the area in scoring and first in rebounding among 5A and 4A schools.

Flower Mound is 13-10 overall and 3-1 in District 5-5A, and Cox has averaged 21.5 points against district opponents.
