Steve Hamm - Special Contributor Ariel Atkins, senior, G, Player of the Year, Duncanville / Senior guard Ariel Atkins owns a legacy that rivals all who came before her in Duncanville. She led the Pantherettes on a memorable 105-game winning streak, to three state tournaments and a pair of championships. Duncanville has made 23 state tournament appearances, won eight championships and produced some of the top players in the country, like Cinietra Henderson, Tiffany Jackson and Tamika Catchings.
Mike Stone - Special Contributor Michael Oldham, Coach of the Year, McKinney North / North has been on a steady rise in three seasons under Oldham. His team won 21 games in 2011-12 and 30 more last season, when he was named the District 13-4A coach of the year.
Michael Ainsworth - Staff Photographer Jade Williams, freshman, F, Newcomer of the Year, The Colony / The versatile freshman averaged 14.9 points, 7.1 rebounds and 3.8 blocks in 32 games this season. She hit double figures in scoring in each of The Colony’s last 11 games on the way to the 4A Region II final. Williams carried The Colony to the first regional tournament in school history. She fell just shy of collecting triple- and quadruple-doubles this season.
Steve Hamm - Special Contributor Terriell Braley, senior, G, 5-9, Mansfield Timberview, First Team All-Area / Named offensive MVP in the competitive District 7-5A, Bradley averaged 16.3 points, 3.8 assists and 4.1 rebounds. She also added 1.7 steals on the defensive end. The Kansas signee will be the third player from the current District 7-5A on the Jayhawks’ roster, joining Duncanville’s Bunny Williams and DeSoto’s Chelsea Gardner.
Steve Hamm - Special Contributor Natalie Chou, sophomore, G/F, 6-1, Plano West, First Team All-Area / Chou averaged 17.4 points, 3.5 rebounds and 1.2 blocks on the way to Plano West’s second state tournament appearance. She had 18 points in West’s semifinal against state champion Manvel. Chou will have colleges lining up to earn her signature in two years. The sophomore is ranked 12 nationally in the 2016 class by ESPN’s HoopGurlz.
Mark M. Hancock - Special Contributor Mikaehla Connor, senior, F, 5-9, McKinney North, First Team All-Area / Connor led North to the program’s first state tournament with 11.7 points and 3.5 rebounds per game. Her numbers were even better in seven playoff games, averaging 14.2 points and five rebounds. Connor made quite a splash in Austin, scoring the game-winning basket and the clinching steal to beat No. 1 San Antonio Brennan in the semifinals. She added a team-high 13 points in the championship game.
Steve Hamm - Special Contributor Tasia Foman, senior, G, 5-6, Duncanville, First Team All-Area / Foman averaged 13.9 points, 4.3 assists and 3.2 steals. Despite her size, Foman also recorded 141 rebounds and 23 blocks. Foman has been a mainstay in the Duncanville starting lineup. She appeared in all 119 games during the last three seasons – which included three trips to state, two championships and a 105-game winning streak.
Mike Stone - Special Contributor Alexandria Gulley, junior, G, 5-8, Skyline, First Team All-Area / Gulley led Skyline to the 5A Region II championship for the first time since 1997. She averaged 13.6 points, four assists, 2.4 rebounds and two steals. The Baylor pledge was named the offensive MVP in District 9-5A and the MVP of the Dallas ISD/Coca-Cola Tournament. She scored 23 points in a regional semifinal at the Ferrell Center, her future home court.
Mark M. Hancock - Special Contributor Lauren Cox, sophomore, F, Flower Mound, Second Team All-Area / Averaged a double-double with 19 points and 14 rebounds during the season.
