UIL rules final call in Celina-Argyle game is not subject to protest

The UIL said Monday that a “judgment call” by the officials in a Class 3A Region II girls basketball final between Celina and Argyle is not subject to protest.

Argyle won the game, 51-50, in double overtime to earn a state tournament berth.

Celina had possession of the ball with 4.8 seconds remaining, and Kynese Davis threw up a 3-point attempt before time expired. She appeared to be fouled by an Argyle player, and one of the three referees from the Temple chapter of the THSBOA blew his whistle. (See the video of it here).

The refs conferred in the middle of the court, then ran off to the locker room without explanation. The game, they apparently had decided, was over.

Had a foul been called, Celina would have been awarded free throws to potentially tie or win the game. If there wasn’t a foul, the mysterious whistle should have stopped the clock.

Celina coach Jordan Davis said she and other school officials spent Monday morning trying to get an explanation from the UIL.

In it statement, the UIL referred to section 1204 (q) of the UIL Constitution and Rules, which states that a protest based on a game or contest official’s decision will not be considered.

“As a coach I’m held responsible when things happen or I make a mistake,” Davis said. “It’s the same with my players. And I wonder if it’s the same way for others involved in the game.”

Lawrence Wren, who is listed as the Temple chapter’s local rules interpreter, declined to comment. He referred all inquiries to the UIL.

A UIL spokesperson said the UIL will not take any action against the Temple chapter or the crew that worked the game.
