Girls basketball playoffs: Defense helps Arl. Bowie pull away from Carroll
L.D. Bell, Duncanville, Plano West, McKinney North also advance
FORT WORTH Arlington Bowie turned up the pressure in the second half and pulled away from Southlake Carroll, 55-42, in a girls Class 5A Region I quarterfinal Tuesday at Nolan Catholic’s Hartnett Arena.
Bowie (29-2), ranked No. 4 in the final 5A state poll, led by three at halftime, but forced eight of Carroll’s 20 turnovers in the third quarter.
“We doubled more on screens,’’ said junior Nia Roberts, who led Bowie with 13 points. “We talked at halftime about boxing out and running the floor. Boxing out helped a lot.’’
Roberts hit the key shot of the game, a third 3-pointer late in the third period to expand a four-point lead to seven. Carroll never got closer than five points the rest of the way.
Balanced scoring, a trademark of the Lady Vols, was evident once again with post Emerald Mayfield and forward Nicole Iloayna getting 12 and 11 points, respectively. Bria Degrate at only 5-7 converted some tough inside shots and finished with nine points.
Bowie coach Kelly Carruthers credited the defensive job of Iloayna on Gretchen Morrison, Carroll’s leading scorer with a 14-point average. Morrison was limited to three points, her only basket a 28-footer to beat the first-period buzzer.
Bowie and Carroll, undefeated champions of District 3-5A and 4-5A, met in the opening week of the season with Bowie winning, 67-53.
For seventh-ranked Carroll (29-5), it marks the fourth straight season to end in a regional quarterfinal defeat. Kennedy Leonard led the Lady Dragons with 11 points and Anna Hurlburt scored 10.
Bowie advances to face two-time defending state champion Duncanville in a 6 p.m. regional semifinal Friday at TCU’s Daniel Meyer Coliseum.
Duncanville ended Bowie’s season last year with a 61-40 win in a regional semifinal.
