Plano West girls can do no wrong late in 56-53 win over rival Plano
West responds with 15-6 run in fourth quarter to trip Plano
PLANO — Plano West didn’t do many things right during the first three quarters of its District 10-5A game against host Plano on Tuesday.
But it could do no wrong during the fourth quarter, rallying for a 56-53 victory to claim sole possession of first place.
“We had to settle in a little bit,” West coach Kristen Perry said. “And it took us four stinking quarters to do it.”
West trailed by as many as 10 points in the second half and entered the final quarter down 47-41. It outscored Plano 15-6 in the fourth and forced seven turnovers. Plano got off only eight shots in the fourth quarter and made two.
Plano West led, 55-53, with 30 seconds remaining, when sophomore Natalie Chou blocked Ogo Obinabo’s shot in the post. West recovered the loose ball, made a free throw on the other end and held on for the win.
West (18-4, 4-0) took its first lead of the game at 51-49 after a jumper by Tiffany Dunlap with 3:46 remaining.
“In the end, we just thought we had to win this game,” Chou said. “And we pulled through.”
Plano West, which shared the district title with Plano last season, is one win ahead of Plano and two ahead of McKinney and Allen in 10-5A.
Plano (19-6, 3-1) took a 31-25 lead into halftime and looked the better team on both ends of the floor. Its defense forced West to take low-percentage shots, and Plano dominated the glass.
Obinabo led Plano with 15 points, and Kara Mitchell and Kylee Guthrie chipped in 12 apiece.
Chou led West with a game-high 17 points on 7-of-13 shooting. She was 3-for-3 from the free throw line. Sophomore guard Callie Owens added 10 points off the bench.
