UIL girls state basketball roundup: Brock earns shot at fifth straight title

AUSTIN — Four-time defending Class 2A girls basketball state champion Brock spotted Centerville an early lead, then used a 15-0 run to cruise to a 42-23 semifinal victory Friday.

Brock (34-5) will play Merkel (38-1) in the championship game at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Frank Erwin Center.

Brock’s Cora Jenkins led all scorers with 13 points, and Taylor Wallace and Braylee Flaska each added nine points for the Lady Eagles. The Brock defense limited Centerville to 9-of-34 shooting from the field and forced 19 turnovers. Brock (34-5) trailed 4-0 before starting its run, and it held Centerville to a single basket in the second quarter.

Brock is making its 19th appearance in the state tournament and has won seven championships. Centerville (30-7) was making its first appearance in the tournament.

Merkel 56, Poth 47: Merkel survived a third-quarter rally by Poth to win a 2A semifinal.

Merkel led 31-21 at halftime, but Poth went on a 12-2 run and tied the score with 3:15 left in the third quarter. Merkel recovered with a balanced offense.

Allison Szabo had 15 points, 10 rebounds and five blocked shots for Merkel, while Ciara Cope scored 11 points and Macy Mays had 10. Tiffany Young added 14 rebounds and seven blocks. Ashley Fuller led Poth (28-6) with 18 points.

Saltillo 41, Roscoe Highland 19: Kendall Bain scored 14 points as Saltillo won a Class A Division II semifinal.

Saltillo (32-5) led 13-2 after one quarter and 21-7 at halftime. Bain outscored Roscoe Highland (31-5) in the first half with 11 points.

Whitharral 58, Leakey 45: Taylor Moore scored 27 points, including 16 in the first quarter, to lead Whitharral to the win in a Class A Division II semifinal. Whitharral (37-4) advanced to the state final for the second time in three years.
