Girls' 3A/Others roundup: Celina falls short; Kennedale wins
COMMERCE — Cheyenne Ramey finished with 11 points, 17 rebounds and seven assists, and Pittsburg withstood multiple challenges to hold off Celina, 41-36, in a Class 3A Region II semifinal at Texas A&M-Commerce.
Shakira Duffey scored 18 points, while Meagan Peters had eight points, seven rebounds and six blocks for Pittsburg (32-5). Pittsburg will play Krum at 1 p.m. Saturday in the regional final.
Alex Jones had 14 points and Sarah Cantu scored 12 for Celina (28-7), the 3A state runner-up last year. K.J. Stastny finished with 11 rebounds, seven points and six blocks, while Kinzie Juergens had seven rebounds.
Celina scored the first points on Cantu’s 3-pointer, but Pittsburg used a 9-0 run to take the lead for good.
Pittsburg maintained its nine-point halftime lead through the third quarter, before Celina opened the fourth on a 10-2 run, led by Jones, who had the first seven points.
Another Cantu 3-pointer cut the deficit to one at 35-34, but Pittsburg closed the game on a 6-2 run.
Kennedale 66, Lubbock Cooper 50: In Lubbock, Autummn Williams had 21 points and 12 rebounds to lead Kennedale past Lubbock Cooper in a 3A Region I semifinal. Kennedale (29-6) will play in the regional final at 1 p.m. Saturday at Texas Tech.
It’s the fourth consecutive season that Kennedale has reached a regional final. It lost the last three, falling to Texarkana Liberty-Eylau in 2010 and to Abilene Wylie each of the last two years.
Travanti Downes added 16 points and nine rebounds for Kennedale.
Triple A Academy 56, Hico 45: In Abilene, Amber Browning scored 31 points to lead Triple A Academy to victory in a Class A Division I Region II semifinal. Triple A Academy will play Goldthwaite in the regional final at noon Saturday at Abilene Christian.
Browning was 17-of-18 from the free throw line and made four 3-pointers, and she also had seven steals and five rebounds.
Imari Bell added 14 points and seven rebounds.
