Unranked Plano girls use full-court press to upset Plano West, take control of 10-5A
PLANO — The Plano girls basketball team had an answer for every Plano West rally Tuesday.
Four answers, to be more specific.
Grace Mitchell, Wilma Afunugo, Kara Mitchell and Haley Wray combined for 66 of Plano’s points in a 72-62 upset of third-ranked Plano West.
Unranked Plano used a full-court press from start to finish to help create 21 West turnovers, including two in the final minute that spurred an 8-0 rally to seal the win.
“I don’t want the girls to think any win is bigger than another, but you can’t help it,” Plano coach Lynn Meger said. “It was a big win for our program.”
It was Plano’s first win against West since 2008 and put Plano (19-6, 4-0) in sole possession of first place in District 10-5A.
West (27-3, 3-1) trailed for almost the entire game, but used a 17-7 run to pull within one possession of the lead with one minute remaining. Two turnovers later, though, and West’s deficit turned into six points and continued to grow.
“We’d seen presses for 29 games now, and we hadn’t had much problem,” West coach Don Patterson said. “We just stood around and held the ball and stood around. People weren’t where they were supposed to be or doing what they were supposed to do.”
Grace Mitchell led all scorers with 20 points. Afunugo and Kara Mitchell had 16 apiece, and Wray scored 14. They accounted for all of Plano’s field goals in the second half.
Tyara Warren-Cox and Devri Owens paced West with 17 points each.
West trailed, 32-28, after a first half in which it shot 34 percent from the floor and was 3-of-13 from the free throw line.
Grace Horn made a layup and Owens sank a 3 to give West the lead back early in the third quarter, but Plano went on an 8-0 run to finish the period and take the lead for good.
