Smith: Denton Guyer's Jerrod Heard could be next Vince Young
Catch SportsDay On Air twice per week on Fox Sports Southwest, when Dallas Morning News experts discuss hot sports topics from the Cowboys, Mavericks, Stars, Rangers, high schools and colleges (check our TV listings for air times). Here are a few highlights from Thursday's episode featuring Kevin Sherrington and Corbett Smith:
On which teams should be at the top:
Smith: You look at the two defending state champs that are back from the Metroplex in Allen in the 5A, Division I, and Denton Guyer in 4A, Division I. The way that Texas splits all its divisions, it’s hard to keep track. But those two teams will definitely be back in those divisions. Allen is the second largest high school in the state. They’ve got their quarterback back. He was a sophomore last year in Kyler Murray. He’s the son of former (Texas) A&M quarterback Ken Murray, and they’ve got a lot of defensive players back. At this point, I think they’ve got four kids that are committed to Division I programs, including Tay Evans, their linebacker, got a couple of DBs that are committed to big schools as well.. They’ll be very very talented, but the quesitons is will they be able to get through all of the hurdles that he Metroplex will provide.
On Denton Guyer:
Smith: I would be remiss if I didn’t mention Denton Guyer. Denton Guyer returns their quarterback Jerrod Heard, who could be the next Vince Young. He’s going to Texas, he’s a really good dual-threat quarterback, a fantastic runner — still developing as a quarterback — but he’s a fantastic talent. They’ve got a lot of kids back. I think they’ve got 12 starters back from last year’s team, which won the state title.
