John Walsh to stay at Guyer; forgoes scheduled interview for Westlake job
Denton Guyer football coach John Walsh, after a weekend meeting with Eanes ISD officials to discuss the vacant Austin Westlake coaching job, has decided not to go to Austin for a scheduled Thursday interview.
Instead, he will remain at Guyer, the program he started from scratch when the school opened in 2005.
“Westlake is an intriguing place to coach football in Texas,” Walsh said. “But what we’ve built here at Guyer High School didn’t warrant all the change that would’ve taken place here.
“I love being the Guyer football coach and being in the city of Denton.”
Walsh is 75-35, including a forfeit loss last season, in his eight seasons at the helm at Guyer. The Guyer job is the only head coaching position Walsh has had. He started the Wildcats’ program after a long stint as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Brownwood.
Guyer is coming off two straight Class 4A Division I state championships. Guyer will make the move up to the newly named Class 6A in 2014.
