Jets QB Greg McElroy, former SL Carroll star, announces NFL retirement
NEW YORK — The New York Jets signed former Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick and released Mark Sanchez on Friday.
The Jets traded up in the 2009 draft to pick Sanchez No. 5 overall out of Southern California, and immediately had success with the two postseason trips.
But things really unraveled during the 2012 season, culminating in him being benched for a game in favor of Greg McElroy — who announced his retirement Friday.
McElroy is 25. “Playing in the NFL was my lifelong dream,” McElroy, who played in Cincinnati last season, said in a statement on his Twitter account.
The Jets selected McElroy out of the University of Alabama in the seventh round of the 2011 NFL Draft. In three NFL seasons he appeared in three regular-season games, completing 61.3 percent of his passes for 214 yards and one touchdown, with one interception.
