5A, 4A Div. I state final previews: Allen vs. Pearland; Guyer vs. SA Brennan
CLASS 5A DIVISION I
Allen vs. Pearland
4 p.m. Saturday (FSSW)
Allen (15-0): The Eagles, who rallied from a 15-point fourth-quarter deficit to beat DeSoto, 42-35, in the semifinals, have won 26 straight games. Allen is trying to finish undefeated for the first time in school history and become the first team to repeat as 5A champion since Katy won in 2007 and ’08. (Katy is also trying to go back-to-back this year in 5A Division II.)
Pearland (14-1): Jacoby Lewis scored on a 97-yard kickoff return with 1:36 left Saturday to give the Oilers a 38-34 victory over San Antonio Madison in the semifinals. Pearland has won six straight since a 42-7 loss to Manvel late in the regular season. Pearland beat Euless Trinity in the 2010 5A Division I championship game.
CLASS 4A DIVISION I
Denton Guyer vs. San Antonio Brennan
8 p.m. Friday
Guyer (13-2): The defending 4A Division I champs are back, thanks to 22 fourth-quarter points in a 22-16 win over Highland Park in the semifinals. Guyer has won 13 straight games, after getting beat by Cedar Hill – which is in Saturday’s 5A Division II title game – and forfeiting its win over Colleyville Heritage because of an ineligible player. Guyer quarterback Jerrod Heard accounted for seven scores in last year’s final against Georgetown, and was named the game’s offensive MVP.
Brennan (15-0): In just its fourth season as a varsity program, Brennan makes its first state final. Quarterback Da’Shawn Key rushed for 194 yards and three touchdowns, while defensive end Derick Roberson registered four sacks in a 31-7 win over Houston Stratford in the semifinals. It should be a great match-up between the 6-4, 230-pound Roberson and Heard, both senior pledges to Texas. Roberson has 20 sacks this season. Brennan has outscored opponents 816-51, its defense surrendering only six touchdowns all season.
