FW Nolan lands first three-peat in 24-21 comeback against Prestonwood
CORSICANA —Luke Alves rushed for 153 yards and a touchdown, and Fort Worth Nolan’s defense permitted just three second-half first downs as Nolan defeated Ptestonwood, 24-21, in the TAPPS Division I state championship on Tuesday night.
Nolan has won three consecutive state titles and five of the last six. The only blemish since 2008 was a loss to Prestonwood in the 2010 championship.
Prestonwood (12-2), which led 14-0 with 4:48 left in the first quarter, managed only 13 offensive plays in the second half as Nolan’s running game and defense controlled the clock.
"We stayed calm and didn’t panic," said Nolan senior linebacker Brennan Murnane about the early defiicit. "We started getting aggressive and jamming their receivers, and we made some plays."
Nolan (10-4) took the lead for good with 2:05 left in the third quarter on Alves’ 1-yard plunge to make it 17-14. Sophomore quarterback Jacob Walden tacked on a 1-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter for Nolan.
Prestonwood (12-2) pulled within 24-21 with 3:34 remaining in the game on Jonthan Heasley’s 35-yard touchdown catch from Ryan Cash.
Nolan recovered an onside kick attempt but punted after failing to pickup a first down. Prestonwood, with only one timeout remaining, threw four straight incomplete passes and Nolan was able to run out the clock.
Prestonwood took a 14-0 lead after its first two drives, scoring on a 16-yard touchdown pass from Twayne Blackwell to Michael Irvin and a 21-yard touchdown paas from Cash to Ryne Carter.
Nolan clawed back on Grant Muehlstein’s 44-yard field goal late in the first quarter and Walden’s 79-yard touchdown pass to David Authier on the first play of the second quarter. Prestonwood maintained its 14-10 lead into halftime.
