Playoff roundup (Saturday): Prestonwood lands state berth; Prime Prep takes TCAL title; Birdville moves on
Prime Prep 54, Tomball Christian 0
Prime Prep roared out to a 27-0 first quarter lead, as they went on to defeat Tomball Christian for the TCAL Championship.
Prime Prep was led by quarterback Antonio Bennett who threw for only 53 yards, however connected for two throwing touchdowns. Wide receiver Jeloni Kilpatrick caught the first Bennett touchdown, a 25 yarder in the first quarter. Wide out Bobby Baze then caught the second touchdown, a 14-yard reception to start the second quarter. Bennett also ran for a 25 yard score in the 4th quarter to complete Prep’s scoring.
Special teams were also a big part of their win, as they returned two punts for scores. The first was a 69-yard return by Alize Ward in the first quarter. The second one came in the 3rd quarter, a 51 yard return by James Proche’.
Tomball Christian was led by their workhorse, running back Gourley Holden who rushed for 36 yards, but carried the ball 29 times.Prestonwood Christian 41 TCA-Addison 17
FRISCO — Michael Irvin had five receptions for 126 yards and two touchdowns, and Eric Stevenson rushed for 148 yards and a pair of scores as Plano Prestonwood Christian won a TAPPS Division I state semifinal.
With its second win over TCA-Addison this season, Prestonwood (12-1) advanced to play district rival Fort Worth Nolan in the state championship game at 7 p.m. Friday at Corsicana’s Tiger Stadium. Prestonwood beat Nolan 36-34 in district play, stopping a two-point conversion attempt with 14 seconds left.
Nolan (9-4) has won two straight state championships and four titles in the last five years. But Prestonwood beat Nolan in the state final in 2010.
Birdville 26, Wolfforth Frenship 22
SWEETWATER — Xavier Turner ran for a 1-yard touchdown with 2:12 left as Birdville rallied to defeat Wolfforth Frenship in a Class 4A Division I Region I semifinal.
Frenship (12-1) took a 22-19 lead early in the final quarter when Trevor Lloyd hauled in a 44-yard touchdown pass from Trevor Eulenbach. Birdville (11-2) lost a fumble at the Frenship 27 midway through the fourth quarter, but the defense forced a three-and-out, and a botched punt gave Birdville the ball at the Frenship 38.
Birdville took the lead for good nine plays later when Turner rumbled in from 1 yard out.
Aus. Lake Travis 55, Jesuit 30
WACO — Austin Lake Travis scored 34 consecutive points in the second half to overcome a three-point halftime deficit in beating Jesuit in a Class 5A Division II Region II semifinal.
The loss snapped Jesuit’s eight-game winning streak after it started the season 1-3.
Running back Shaun Nixon, who has orally committed to Texas A&M, rushed for 337 yards and five touchdowns for Lake Travis (11-1). Early in the fourth quarter, Lake Travis’ Chayce Pannell intercepted a pass 5 yards deep in the end zone and returned it 100 yards to the Jesuit 5-yard line. On the next play, Nixon scored his fifth touchdown of the game.
First Baptist 47, Frisco Legacy Christian 4
BEDFORD — Purdue pledge Trae Hart caught eight passes for 147 yards and a touchdown, and he also returned an interception for a score as First Baptist won a TAPPS Division III state semifinal.
Junior Luke Baumgardner, normally an offensive tackle and defensive end, was pressed into emergency service at quarterback for Legacy Christian (10-3) when starter Ryan Davis broke his arm on the second play from scrimmage.
Aledo 54, Canyon 14
SNYDER — Quarterback Luke Bishop had 170 of his team’s 431 rushing yards as Aledo routed previously unbeaten Canyon in a Class 4A Division II Region I semifinal.
Aledo (13-0) will play Wichita Falls (8-5) at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Justin Northwest.
Midland Christian 70, Dallas Christian 7
ABILENE — Midland Christian (13-0) scored 49 first-half points and held Dallas Christian to 81 total yards in a TAPPS Division II state semifinal. Dominique Weaver returned a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown for Dallas Christian (12-1).
