Playoff roundup (Friday): Kilgore stays undefeated to bounce Frisco Lone Star; Nolan returns to state title game
Kilgore 56, Frisco Lone Star 21
FORNEY — The season came to an end for Frisco Lone Star, which had few answers for a dominating Kilgore offense in a Class 3A Division I Region II quarterfinal game at City Bank Stadium.
Frisco Lone star (8-5) fell behind early and faced a 35-0 deficit before finally breaking through, getting a 2-yard scoring catch from Austin De Leon with 1:18 left in the opening half.
That late score helped spark 21 straight points by Lone Star’s offense, with Jason Shelley scoring on a 35-yard run and De Leon catching his second touchdown of the day to cut the lead to 35-21.
Lone Star got no closer, and Kilgore scored the final 21 points.
Kilgore (12-0) rolled up 486 yards on the ground and had three players rush for more than 100 yards.
Lone Star’s Shelley finished with 242 yards passing and two touchdowns, while chipping in 55 yards rushing and another score. Jordan Jones hauled in nine passes for 113 yards, and De Leon had seven catches for 52 yards.
FW Nolan 55, Arg. Liberty Chr. 20
KELLER — Senior running back Luke Alves ran for 206 yards and four touchdowns to power Fort Worth Nolan past district rival Argyle Liberty Christian in a TAPPS Division I state semifinal. Nolan ran for 339 yards in the game.
Nolan (9-4) will try to win a third consecutive state championship next Friday in Corsicana when it plays the winner of Saturday’s Plano Prestonwood vs. TCA-Addison game. Nolan will be playing in a state title game for the seventh consecutive season.
Liberty Christian (9-4) drove to Nolan’s 18-yard line on its first possession, but Nolan senior linebacker Miles Murray intercepted a swing pass and ran 75 yards the other way for a touchdown. Liberty Christian’s next two possessions ended with punts, and Nolan responded each time with a clock-chomping 13-play drive that culminated in touchdown runs by Alves that gave Nolan a 21-0 lead.
