Playoff roundup: Cedar Hill rolls past Hebron; Keller Fossil Ridge advances

ARLINGTON –  In Cedar Hill’s run to last year’s Class 5A Division II state final, junior receiver Demarkus Lodge was a relatively anonymous underclassman. After two rounds of this year’s playoffs, Lodge is anything but low-profile.

A 6-3, 190-pounder, Lodge had four first-half touchdown catches Saturday night as Cedar Hill beat Hebron, 42-21, at AT&T Stadium in the final game of a quadrupleheader. Lodge finished with six catches for 129 yards.

Cedar Hill (10-2) will play Abilene Cooper (8-4) at 2 p.m. Saturday at Tarleton State in a 5A Division II Region I semifinal.

Being heavily recruited by Texas A&M, Texas, Baylor and Ohio State, Lodge gave Cedar Hill a 7-0 lead early in the second quarter as he turned a quick out route into a 41-yard touchdown by turning upfield and racing untouched into the end zone.

Lodge had just six catches for 59 yards as a sophomore and didn’t have a catch in a state final loss to Katy. But he blossomed quickly into a starter last spring and had 50 catches for 997 yards and 15 touchdowns in Cedar Hill’s first 11 games, including nine catches for 246 yards and two touchdowns in a bi-district playoff victory over Temple last week.

Cedar Hill led 14-0 after Lodge’s second touchdown, a 27-yard pass from lefty quarterback Justin McMillan.

Hebron pulled within 14-7 as senior Jamal Adams returned the kickoff 77 yards. Adams, a highly regarded senior defensive back with college offers from around the country, was part of a Hebron secondary unable to slow down Lodge. Adams scored Hebron’s second touchdown on his first carry as a receiver by taking a 24-yard jet sweep for a score late in the third quarter.

Cedar Hill took a 21-7 lead on a fourth-and-6 pass to Lodge, which turned into a 39-yard touchdown. McMillan scrambled to his left, waved Lodge upfield and lofted a pass beyond the secondary for Lodge’s third scoring catch.

On a third-and-goal play at Hebron’s 14, Lodge again worked his way open for a touchdown pass to give Cedar Hill a three-score lead in the final seconds of the half. Cedar Hill scored on its first possession of the second half as junior receiver/running back Denvre Daniels took a direct snap for a 5-yard touchdown run up the middle.

But with Central (10-2) facing third-and-10 on the ensuing possession, Charlie Walker intercepted a pass and returned it 23 yards for a touchdown to increase Fossil Ridge’s lead to 18-7.

After Fossil Ridge forced a quick three-and-out and a short punt against a stiff wind, wide receiver Ryan Parker hauled in his first touchdown of the game on a slant route from 35 yards out for a 25-7 lead. Parker had a pair of second-half touchdown receptions and finished with seven catches for 92 yards.

The second quarter belonged to Boyd. Boyd answered the Longview score with a 17-play scoring drive of its own. Junior tailback Dedrick Scrivens scored on a five yard run with 5:03 remaining in the second quarter to even the score.

Longview appeared to be on its way to answering the Boyd score but Jamycal Hasty fumbled on 1st and 10 at the Boyd 14. This would be Longview’s only drive in the second quarter.

Boyd followed with 14-play drive and went ahead 10-7 with four seconds remaining before half when Cameron Powell kicked a 25 yard field goal. Boyd ran 29 offensive plays in the second quarter compared to seven for Longview.

Time of possession changed drastically for both clubs. Boyd ran 39 offensive plays in the first half and only 21 in the second. Longview ran only 25 first half plays but ran 38 plays in the second.
