Sachse wastes 22-point lead, beats Mesquite, 63-56, on TD with 27 seconds left
ROCKWALL — Devine Ozigbo’s 15-yard touchdown run with 27 seconds left gave Sachse a 63-56 bi-district playoff victory and quell a miraculous Mesquite comeback Friday at Wilkerson-Sanders Stadium.
Sachse led 42-14 at halftime and had a 22-point lead with 4:29 left in the fourth quarter.
Mesquite backup quarterback Colby Callaway orchestrated the comeback, throwing touchdown passes of 77, 34 and 32 yards in the final three minutes, 44 seconds.
The last of the three touchdowns, to wide receiver Charles Grant, pulled Mesquite within two points at 56-54. Callaway converted the two-point conversion with a pass to Jandt Weary to tie the score with 1:37 remaining.
Mesquite recovered two onside kicks, converted a pair of two-point conversions and maintained its composure after a 75-yard touchdown run by Ozigbo with 4:29 remaining.
But Sachse pulled it together after watching its big lead disappear and completed an efficient final series.
Quarterback Kent Myers passed or ran for first downs on three consecutive plays, then Ozigbo broke through the middle for his 15-yard, game-winning score.
Mesquite had 21 seconds left but only got as far as the Sachse 40-yard line when time expired.
Sachse (11-0) will face Skyline in a 5A Division I Region II area playoff at 4:30 p.m. next Saturday at the Cotton Bowl.
Wide receiver Devin Duvarney helped build Sachse’s 28-point halftime lead with three touchdowns. He finished with 137 receiving yards on six receptions.
Myers threw for 274 yards, five touchdowns and had two second-half interceptions. Ozigbo had 183 yards rushing and three touchdowns.
Wide receiver Octayvius Miles led Mesquite with 216 receiving yards and three scores.
Mesquite, which beat Sachse in the same round last year, finished its season with a 5-6 record.
