Interception, punt recovery help Denton Ryan survive Heritage QB's big passing night
GRAPEVINE — Denton Ryan used a momentum-turning interception by Robert Conner and Reilly Martinez’s recovery of a muffed punt in the fourth quarter to extend its bi-district playoff win streak to six in a row.
Ryan held off Colleyville Heritage, 44-34, in a Class 5A Division II bi-district playoff Friday night at Mustang-Panther Stadium.
Denton Ryan (8-2), No. 13 in SportsDay’s Class 5A area ranking, never trailed, but could not afford to relax until Tyron Williams’ 1-yard touchdown run upped its lead to 44-28 with 2:47 remaining.
Ryan, third-place finisher in District 5-5A behind Coppell and Hebron, saw its comfortable lead reduced to six points, 34-28, at the end of the third period.
A 40-yard punt return by Ryan’s Trent Willis set up Marc Orozco’s 25-yard field goal to widen the lead to 37-28 two minutes into the fourth quarter.
Colleyville Heritage (8-3), runner-up to Euless Trinity in District 6-5A, stayed within striking distance thanks to quarterback Griffin Pickler’s 388 passing yards and three touchdown throws.
Receiver Jacob Sisk had 10 catches for 119 yards and two scores.
Heritage running back Demarco Corbin punched in a pair of touchdown runs.
Colleyville Heritage outgained Ryan, 426-274, but turned the ball over six times to just once for the Raiders.
The victory was No. 150 for coach Joey Florence at Ryan.
Ryan will advance to an 11 a.m. kickoff next Saturday at AT&T Stadium in Arlington to meet the winner of a bi-district playoff between Mansfield (5-5) and Waco Midway (8-2) Saturday afternoon in Corsicana.
The difference in Ryan’s 27-14 halftime lead was two touchdowns on alert returns by a pair of seniors. Reese Strait returned a fumble 32 yards and Tederick Williams picked up a blocked punt and scored from the 9.
