Despite RB's four TDs, Frisco needs onside kick recovery to hold off West Mesquite, 30-23
RICHARDSON — Despite Matt Nollman’s four touchdowns, Frisco had to recover an onside kick — twice — at the end Friday to hold off West Mesquite, 30-23.
West Mesquite (5-6) pulled within a touchdown with 1:13 left and tried an onside kick, which Frisco recovered. Frisco’s offense had already run onto the field when the officials announced an offside penalty, giving West Mesquite one more chance.
Frisco (8-3) recovered the second onside kick as well, then ran out the clock to end the Class 4A, Division II bi-district game at Eagle-Mustang Stadium.
“That could have been the game,” Frisco coach Vance Gibson said. “The kids ended up making a play when they had to make a play. They [West Mesquite] did a great job working their way back into the game. They were a heck of a team. We feel fortunate to win.”
Frisco will meet Lincoln in the second round of Region II playoffs at 9 p.m. Friday at AT&T Stadium.
Frisco, No. 11 in the area Class 4A rankings, took advantage of an aggressive West Mesquite defense for both of Nollman’s touchdown receptions. When No. 19 West Mesquite stacked the line of scrimmage, Nollman floated out into the left flat and turned short passes into touchdowns of more than 70 yards.
Nollman also rushed for 96 yards and two scores.
After an interception by Bailey Phillips, a 26-yard touchdown run by Le’Billie Hunter pulled West Mesquite within 23-16.
Later, West Mesquite drove to the Frisco 15, but turned the ball over on downs with 5:23 left.
West Mesquite then forced a Frisco punt with 2:56 remaining to set up Darrius Payne-Edwards’ 7-yard touchdown catch from Chason Virgil with 1:13 left.
Tyler Rodriguez kicked three field goals to help keep West Mesquite close.
