Jesuit D ensures QB's 509 passing yards, 5 TDs don't go for naught in 48-41 win over Plano West
MURPHY — Jesuit quarterback Bo Schneider threw for 509 yards and five touchdowns. Plano West running back Sotonya Jamabo ran for 214 yards and two scores.
But in a game where the two teams combined for more than 1,100 yards in total offense, it was a defensive stand that turned the tide as Jesuit surprised 20th-ranked Plano West, 48-41, in a Class 5A Division II Region II bi-district shootout at Kimbrough Stadium.
Leading 41-38, the Jesuit defensive front stoned Jamabo for a three-yard loss on fourth-and-one at the Jesuit 6 on the fourth play of the final quarter.
Then Schneider led what proved to be the clinching drive, completing passes of 12 yards to Charlie Eikenberg, 24 to Kellen McAlone and 43 to Orion Salters on a 10-play, 91-yard march that ended in a one-yard touchdown run by Matt Slovak.
Plano West (6-5) drove to the Jesuit 15-yard line with just over three minutes to play, but twice had passes batted away in the end zone before settling for a 37-yard field goal by Parker Davidson.
But Jesuit gained three first downs to eat up the remaining clock and secure the win. One of those first downs came on a penalty, Plano West’s 12th of the night for 129 yards.
Jesuit (8-3) advances to meet the winner of Saturday’s game between Garland Naaman Forest and Rockwall.
Jesuit led 31-24 after a wild first half that saw Plano West commit four major penalties and cough up a fumble to fall behind 17-0.
It could have been worse. Jesuit was on the doorstep with a second-and-goal from the Plano West 6-yard line to open the second quarter.
But Brett Clark’s interception and 49-yard return to the Jesuit 41 turned the tide. Four plays later, Jamabo scored Plano West’s first touchdown from 16 yards out.
After Jesuit went three-and-out, Jamabo sprinted 76 yards for his second score. For the half, he had eight carries for 158 yards.
From there the two teams traded scores for the rest of the half.
Schneider threw his third and fourth touchdown passes of the first half on the next two Jesuit series, finding Salters for 62 yards and Garrett Amy for 30. Schneider was 15-of-22 for 321 yards in the first half.
Salters and McAlone caught nine passes each from Schneider. Salters had 228 yards and a touchdown. McAlone had 187 yards and two scores.
Auston Anderson added 186 yards and three touchdowns on the ground for Plano West, which finished with 429 yards rushing.
