Bi-District roundup (5A): Allen, Desoto each score 60; Hebron notches shutout

Allen 63, Lake Highlands 6

Saturday’s Waco Midway vs. Mansfield game has been moved from Corsicana to Midlothian and will now start at 6 p.m. instead of 2 p.m. Mansfield coach Jeff Hulme said the scoreboard at Corsicana caught on fire, forcing the change in location for the Class 5A Division II bi-district game.

Allen used a 35-point second quarter to pull away from Lake Highlands, 63-6, in the first round of the Class 5A Division I playoffs Friday night.

After jumping out to a 14-0 first-quarter lead, Allen scored three touchdowns over a span of two minutes.

Running back Jaelen Barlow ran 53 yards for a touchdown on the first play of the second quarter. That was followed by a 57-yard punt return by Kendall Clinton, who was running backward to get into position as Lake Highlands punted the ball.

Allen needed only eight seconds to score again. After Lake Highlands fumbled the ensuing kickoff, Kyler Murray hit Jalen Guyton on a 28-yard touchdown pass.

Allen will play Mesquite Horn in the next round next Friday at the Cotton Bowl. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m.

DeSoto 67, Copperas Cove 21

WACO — Desmon White passed for 394 yards and three scores as DeSoto outclassed Copperas Cove in their Class 5A Division I bi-district matchup at Waco ISD Stadium.

Desoto (11-0), which outscored Cove 27-0 in the second quarter, totaled 813 yards and 35 first downs.

DeSoto scored on 10 of its 12 possessions. One drive was cut short by a fumble, and DeSoto had the ball when the game ended.

DeSoto’s Jaimon Peterson rushed for 197 yards and four touchdowns and accounted for 231 total yards. Larry Nixon finished with 157 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

Manny Harris finished with 366 yards passing to lead Cove (6-5). Phillip Batiste caught nine passes for 133 yards while Tre Powell caught five for 117.

DeSoto will meet Coppell at 2 p.m. next Saturday at AT&T Stadium in the area round.

Coppell 56, Irving 8

IRVING — Charles West caught two touchdown passes and rushed for another TD as Coppell defeated Irving in a Division I bi-district game at Irving Schools Stadium.

West finished with 106 yards rushing.

Quarterback Skyler Bonneau threw for 156 yards and three touchdowns. Running back Brandon Rice added two rushing touchdowns for Coppell (9-1), which led 28-0 after the first quarter and never looked back.

The Coppell defense had two interceptions, one of which was returned 32 yards for a touchdown by Kilian Bresnahan, and held Irving (6-4) to 79 yards rushing.

Hebron 27, Hurst L.D. Bell 0

HEBRON — With each team barely totaling 200 yards of offense, Hebron (8-3) did enough to beat Hurst L.D. Bell in a Division II bi-district game and advance to next week’s area-round of the playoffs.

Bell (7-4) tried an onside kick on the opening kickoff, but Hebron recovered and scored on the first play from scrimmage. Jamal Adams took a short pass from quarterback Carson Proffitt and escaped for a 44-yard touchdown.

In the second quarter, Hebron’s David Akere scored on a 30-yard interception return to make it 17-0 at the half. Akere had another interception in the second half.

Keller F. Ridge 45, Arlington 9

DENTON — Keller Fossil Ridge used a big second half to break open a close game and thump Arlington in a Division II bi-district playoff game at Apogee Stadium.

Keller Fossil Ridge (8-3), which scored 35 second-half points, got big plays from quarterback Jacob Gnacinski and its defense.

Gnacinski, who had 243 total yards, had two second-half rushing scores and added a 7-yard touchdown pass. Keshawn Mitchell ran 5 yards for Fossil Ridge’s final touchdown.

The Fossil Ridge defense forced six turnovers, including interceptions returned for touchdowns by Charlie Walker and Anthony Villalobos.

McKinney Boyd 24, Rich. Pearce 9

PLANO — Quarterback Curtis Ladd and a stout defense led McKinney Boyd to a Division II bi-district victory over Richardson Pearce.

Ladd rushed for 57 yards and touchdowns of 23 and 9 yards. Dedrick Scrivens scored on a 4-yard run for Boyd (7-4).

Boyd will play the winner of Saturday’s Longview-Rowlett game.

Arl. Lamar 36, Justin Northwest 29

NORTH RICHLAND HILLS — Shane Beuchele threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to Landry Bray and added a 14-yard scoring run in a two-minute span of the fourth quarter as Arlington Lamar (9-2) rallied to defeat Justin Northwest (8-3) in a Division II bi-district game at Birdville Fine Arts/Athletic Complex.

Lamar drove 89 yards in 11 plays and scored on Buechele’s pass to Bray. Buechele threw to Alex Baird for a two-point conversion to tie the game with 4:41 remaining.

Marquise McClinton recovered a Northwest fumble on the ensuing kickoff return to give the ball back to Lamar at the Northwest 24. Buechele broke a tackle on his 14-yard touchdown run to put Lamar up 36-29 with 3:19 left.
