Third-string passer keeps Lovejoy afloat in 47-44 win over Wylie East
WYLIE — Lovejoy was down to its third-string quarterback late in the fourth quarter, holding on to a 3-point lead against Wylie East with a playoff berth on the line.
Wide receiver Chochy Luce had already done enough. The senior Lovejoy wide receiver recorded four touchdowns before being thrown under center when starting quarterback Dakota Michaels injured his left knee with 4:38 remaining.
Luce converted a fourth-and-1 at the Wylie East 14-yard line, and finished out the final Lovejoy touchdown drive that Michaels started — providing just enough cushion for a dramatic 47-44 win. The victory punches Lovejoy’s (7-3, 5-2) playoff ticket and eliminates Wylie East (5-5, 4-3), which last year made its first-ever regional semifinal playoff appearance.
Luce finished with three catches for 95 yards and a touchdown to go along with three rushing scores. Before Michaels was injured, the second-string quarterback tallied 135 yards passing and 114 yards rushing.
Wylie East led 30-26 after a wild first half that included four lead changes and five deep passing touchdowns. Wylie East senior quarterback Garrett McCain threw touchdowns of 80, 58 and 38 yards. Michaels passed for a 26-yard score, and Lovejoy wide receiver Aaron Fuller tossed a 56-yard touchdown to Luce on a trick play.
But the Lovejoy defense stiffened in the second half, not allowing a single point in the third quarter. Two Luce rushing touchdowns gave Lovejoy a 10-point lead in the fourth. Running back Grant Jarvis rushed for a 10-yard score on that pivotal Luce-quarterbacked drive.
Wylie East responded with a 1-yard touchdown rush from freshman running back Eno Bengamin and another on a 48-yard McCain-to-Jordan Wyatt touchdown score to cut the lead to 3 points with 2:31 left.
But Luce was able to run out the clock out to end the game as Wylie East ran out of timeouts.
