Raul DelaRosa's FG on last play of fourth quarter and in OT lifts McKinney North over Wylie East, 42-39
McKINNEY — McKinney North kicker Raul DelaRosa’s 44-yard field goal attempt fluttered in the air and hooked a little right. It also stayed in between the uprights and crossed the bar. The kick came as time expired in the fourth quarter and vaulted McKinney North into a tie with Wylie East, 39-39.
Then North defensive back Nick Hutchins intercepted a pass on East’s first overtime possession, running back Ronald Jones broke off a 13-yard run on the first play of North’s overtime possession and DelaRosa played hero once again, hitting a 30-yard field goal to give North (5-4, 4-2 in District 13-4A) the win, 42-39.
On the third play of the game, North’s Ronald Jones took a handoff up the middle, broke a tackle at the line of scrimmage and jetted 70 yards for the touchdown. After East (5-4, 4-2) punted, Jones scored again, this time taking it 85 yards.
Jones had 161 yards and two touchdowns on his first four carries. But from then on, the East defense stiffened. Jones was held to 76 yards on his final 21 carries.
East quarterback Garrett McCain led a comeback. He threw one touchdown and rushed for four more as East took an 11-point lead.
North ran trick play — a running back pass — for a 63-yard completion that set up a touchdown. North then forced East to punt and scored again to take a 36-32 lead. East answered by mounting a 16-play drive to score with just 29 seconds left to take a three-point lead.
But a long return and a couple of quick plays got North in range. DelaRosa did the rest.
