Sherrington: Bullying lawsuit against Aledo coach Tim Buchanan is a fairly ridiculous deal

Columnist Kevin Sherrington answered questions in a chat Wednesday. Here are some highlights.

Question: Should UIL put cap on margin of victory?

Sherrington: I know that's been proposed because of Aledo's 91-0 rout of Western Hills, and the resulting "bullying" lawsuit against Tim Buchanan. A fairly ridiculous deal. I'm not in favor of calling football games off, even though we have that in place in baseball. In high school, it's 15 runs after 3 and 10 after five. Those are good rules. But baseball games are attended by about 20 people, if you're lucky. Football games have bands, cheerleaders, drill teams, lots of people who prepare all week for this opportunity to perform. They should get that chance, even if the team is playing poorly. All a dominant team can do is empty the bench and go conservative. Having not seen the game, I don't know if that's what Aledo did. I know Buchanan a little bit. A very classy guy. Hard to believe he'd run it up on purpose.

Question: Is there more that needs to be done to ensure that the games are reasonably competitive? Even with the class system (5A, 4A, etc.), are there schools that have no business playing each other because they're so unevenly matched?

Sherrington: Well, there's just so much you can do. You want to keep the district teams as close to each other as possible, because no one wants to be traveling like they have to in West Texas. But proximity doesn't mean they'll be competitive. If you load up all the good teams in one district, and the bad ones in another, is that fair? Teams don't make the playoffs that could win the next district over. I think I'd rather risk the occasional 91-0 game.
