DeSoto star Desmon White flips commitment from UNT to TCU

DeSoto quarterback Desmon White, who committed to North Texas earlier this month, has backed out of that pledge and now plans to sign with TCU. White confirmed his plans via text message Tuesday morning.

“Just the competition of playing in the Big 12, and TCU has always been a school I wanted to attend,” White said of his reasoning for committing to TCU.

Oral commitments are nonbinding. Feb. 5 is the first day that a football player in the Class of 2014 can sign a national letter of intent.

DeSoto coach Claude Mathis talked to White before the quarterback made his decision. Mathis said that it was tough for White to part ways with UNT because of the relationship he had built with UNT coach Dan McCarney and his assistants.

“McCarney is a first-class guy,” Mathis said. “North Texas is really lucky to have him. I spoke with Desmon earlier. He really likes North Texas. That made it hard for him to switch.”

White has been one of the best playmakers in the state for DeSoto (7-0, 4-0 District 7-5A), which is ranked second in the state in Class 5A. White has thrown for 1,881 yards and 17 touchdowns and rushed for 867 and 11 touchdowns. He is on the small side at about 5-8 and 160 pounds and will move to slot receiver in college.
