Brad Loper - Staff Photographer Justin Northwest (4-5A): While a bi-district playoff exit was hard on Justin Northwest, the Texas have returned with an unbeaten regular season. The clean slate will be difficult with area-ranked No. 3 Southlake Carroll looming, but a deep playoff run could certainly be in the cards. QB Jesse Drummer has completed 73 percent of his passes for 901 yards and 10 touchdowns.
David Minton - CHRONICLE Denton Ryan (5-5A): Denton Ryan hasn't faced stiff competition this year but has taken care of business, winning all four of its games by at least 27 points. Running back Tyrone Williams is averaging 11.63 yards per carry.
Michael Ainsworth - Staff Photographer DeSoto (7-5A): DeSoto has made a case as the best team in the state with wins against state and regional powers. Senior QB Desmon White has thrown for 1,365 yards and rushed for 585 more. He's an early candidate for the area's top offensive player.
Steve Hamm - Special Contributor Mansfield Timberview (7-5A): Timberview is off to the best start in school history. It started 3-0 in 2011, when it reached the state semifinals. Timberview ranks second among area 5A teams in total defense and first in rushing defense. DB Brandon Simmons is committed to Stanford, and DB Ed Paris is committed to LSU.
Matt Strasen - Special Contributor Allen (10-5A): No surprise to find the top-ranked team in the area and state on this list. Allen's defense has held some of the state's best teams to just 16 points per game. Junior QB Kyler Murray has passed for 1,228 yards and 11 touchdowns.
Mark M. Hancock - Special Contributor Sachse (11-5A): Is this the year Sachse breaks through? We'll find out on Oct. 18 against Garland, the game that will probably decide the district champion. Sachse hasn't won a district title since opening in 2002. Senior QB Kent Myers has thrown for 1,460 yards and 19 TDs.
John F. Rhodes - Special Contributor Mesquite Horn (12-5A): Horn has made a steady rise up SportsDay's area rankings to No. 7 in the latest poll. Horn has never won a district championship, let alone achieved an unbeaten season. QB Destri White has passed for 1,048 yards and 11 touchdowns.
BRAD McCLENDON - Contributor North Mesquite (12-5A): North Mesquite hasn't gotten much of a test yet this season, but solid District 12-5A competition will make even earning a playoff berth difficult. Senior running backs Corey Hunt and Ta'Varius Luke have combined for 1,291 yards and 12 touchdowns.
David Minton - DRC Lake Dallas (5-4A):One of the biggest surprises among the unbeatens, Lake Dallas is averaging 43.8 points in its four victories behind QB Dagan Haehn. The sophomore has thrown for 1,073 yards and an area-leading 17 touchdowns. Josh Jackson has been his favorite target with 460 yards and nine touchdowns.
Stewart F. House - Special Contributor The Colony (9-4A): The Colony can set its eyes firmly on a district title (and perhaps an undefeated season) if it beats Frisco on Thursday. The Colony hasn't needed much offense other than running back Bryan Hammond, who has rushed for 862 yards and 12 touchdowns.
John F. Rhodes - Special Contributor Mesquite Poteet (10-4A): Poteet hasn't missed a beat under first-time head coach Kody Groves. QB Lane Novy has thrown for 1,196 yards and 11 touchdowns, and RB Jaylon Smith has rushed for 478 yards and six touchdowns. Poteet is loaded with talent on defense, too. LB Malik Jefferson has offers across the country, and DBs Nate Gaines and Verkedric Vaughns are committed to SMU and Baylor, respectively.
John F. Rhodes - Special Contributor Dallas Carter (11-4A): Carter is one of three unbeatens in District 11-4A, and only one of them can potentially finish the season that way. QB Kenneth Spencer has a 7-to-1 touchdown to interception ratio, and RB Corey Avery has rushed for 744 yards and six touchdowns. WR Jordan Ingram, an SMU pledge, has 227 receiving yards and six touchdowns. Senior LB Cameron Hampton is a Texas pledge.
Mike Stone - Special Contributor Seagoville (11-4A): Seagoville has made the playoffs in three of the last four seasons, and missed out last year after tying for fourth place. Senior running back Traevon Payne is averaging 10.4 yards per carry, rushing for 458 yards and seven touchdowns. Four more rushers have gone for 100 or more yards each and combined for nine touchdowns.
Mark M. Hancock - Special Contributor South Oak Cliff (11-4A): South Oak Cliff hasn't beaten a team with a winning record yet, so it's hard to figure out just how strong this team can be. There are, though, several powerful weapons on offense, including QB Kenneth Arthur II (900 passing yards, 12 TDs) and RB Jordan Stevenson (654 rushing yards, 6 TDs). WR Fonzale Davis, a North Texas pledge, has been Arthur's favorite target with 478 yards and five touchdowns.
Christian Randolph - Staff Photographer Ennis: (15-4A): District 15-4A is perhaps the most unpredictable district in the area, and every game going forward has playoff implications. Ennis RB Terence Williams, a Baylor pledge, has rushed for 399 yards and six touchdowns. QB Devin Smith has thrown for 603 yards and six touchdowns.
Kelley Chinn - Special Contributor Mansfield Legacy (15-4A): Senior RB Kijana Amous has carried the ball 87 times for 529 yards and 11 touchdowns. He holds an offer from New Mexico State and may pick up more as his senior season progresses. Legacy will face teams in SportsDay's area top-20 in three of its next four games.
Michael Clements - DRC Argyle (10-3A): Argyle, the top-ranked team in the area, looks capable of running the table on the way to a state championship. Texas Tech pledge Ian Sadler has 180 rushing yards, 233 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns. QB Brandon Boyzuick has thrown for 587 yards and seven touchdowns.
Mike Stone - Special Contributor Celina (10-3A) Much like last year, a showdown against Argyle in the season finale will almost certainly decide this district. Regardless of the winner, both teams are capable of deep playoff runs. QB Nathan Elliott has thrown for 911 yards and 13 touchdowns, pacing an offense that is averaging more than 38 points per game. WR Cash Conder has been Nathan's prime target, racking up 23 catches for 306 yards and four touchdowns.
Stewart F. House - Special Contributor Frisco Lone Star (10-3A): Lone Star is making some noise in what could be its last season in Class 3A before a move up to 4A. RB Ramon Harris has run for 536 yards and eight touchdowns, and QB Chase Moake has 820 passing yards and eight TDs. Its growth should be apparent in games against Celina and Argyle this season. Last year Lone Star lost to Celina, 61-9, and to Argyle, 69-0.
Stewart F. House Princeton (12-3A): There are playmakers all around the offense, including QB Jourdan Blake (613 passing yards, 8 TDs), RB Trey Jackson (849 rushing yards, 10 TDs) and WR Jakari Dillard (309 receiving yards, 4 TDs). Princeton lost its meeting against Melissa last season, finished second in the district and reached the area round of the playoffs.
