Carrollton Newman Smith safety Kalen Berry diagnosed with cancer

Carrollton Newman Smith safety Kalen Berry is scheduled to undergo surgery on Monday morning after being diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma, a form of cancer.

The cancer was discovered in late July, Newman Smith head coach Paul Ressa wrote in an email.

“This locker room has been really shaken this summer,” Ressa said. “The coaching fraternity has been awesome and we appreciate everything that has been done.”

Newman Smith, which posted a 4-6 record last year, also dealt with the offseason death of Jaquis Jones, a defensive lineman who drowned in Lewisville Lake in June.
