Corbett Smith: Lancaster's Daeshon Hall could provide National Signing Day surprise

Catch SportsDay On Air twice per week on Fox Sports Southwest, when Dallas Morning News experts discuss hot sports topics from the Cowboys, Mavericks, Stars, Rangers and colleges (check our TV listings for air times). Here are a few highlights from Monday's episode featuring Corbett Smith and Kevin Sherrington:

On if any signing day surprises should be expected:

Smith: "There are a couple of kids in our top 100 that haven't committed. Both Lancaster products. Daeshon Hall, a star defensive end, was our Defensive Player of the Year. He's still up in the air. He's considered a soft verbal in the recruiting parlance to Washington. But his mom and his family now live in the metroplex, and there was thought that they would move back to the Pacific Northwest where he's from. But that doesn't seem like that's going to happen so some state schools have gotten involved. Texas A&M and TCU are still in the mix there. He could make a switch."

Smith: "I think it's bigger for the high schoolers maybe not necessarily the high schools because what are they going to get out of it. You hope they're not getting recruiting prowess out of it. That very well might happen. Kids might move into the community to play football there. For the colleges, it's really the ingredients for the dinner they're going to serve in three or four years. They need those players to come in and sign with them. The big question mark is who becomes good. That's the big unknown at this point. There is nobody that can really tell you that. Last year's national No. 1 Dorial Green-Beckham ended up getting in trouble with the law and didn't have a great year at Missouri. The year before that, Jadeveon Clowney looks like he's one of the best players in the country so it's really a crapshoot. For colleges, they need to stock their class with as many high profile prospects as they can get because surely some of those kids are going to pan out."
