Corsicana Mildred earns spot in 2A Div. II football championship with convincing win against Sonora
MARBLE FALLS — Corsicana Mildred punched its ticket to the Class 2A Division II title game Friday night, getting big plays in a 28-14 victory over Sonora at Mustangs Stadium.
Mildred (13-1) will face East Bernard in the 2A Division I championship final, which will be played at 8 p.m. Thursday at Cowboys Stadium.
Mildred’s defense held Sonora to six first downs and 190 yards while the offense racked up three second-half touchdowns to break open what had been a close contest.
The game started well for Mildred, as Sonora had a costly fumble that rolled into the end zone on the game’s first snap. Sonora recovered the fumble but was flagged for intentional grounding for a safety and a 2-0 Mildred lead.
Mildred added to its lead with 4:13 left in the opening half on a 28-yard field goal by Devin O’Sullivan. The kick finished off a 17-play drive, highlighted by a 29-yard catch by Draylon Sterling from Nic Shimonek.
Shimonek led the way on offense, throwing for 176 yards while rushing for a team-high 89 yards. He threw for a touchdown and ran for another.
The second half also went Mildred’s way at the start, with Sterling plunging in from 3 yards out to cap a 13-play, 62-yard scoring drive. A pair of pass interference penalties by Sonora helped keep the scoring drive alive for Mildred.
Mildred kept the pressure on during its next drive, as Will Burnham (five catches, 71 yards) had a dynamic 27-yard scoring catch to push the lead to 19-0 with 3:06 left in the third quarter. Burnham’s score was set up by an interception by Raleigh Seilheimer near midfield for Mildred.
The Mildred defense continued its big-play ways in the fourth quarter, as Nic Stone got a sack in the end zone for a 21-0 edge.
Shimonek then closed Mildred’s scoring with a 29-yard scoring run with 8:30 left.
Sonora (11-4) racked up a pair of late touchdowns from Chance Campbell and Darien Lopez.
