Area-round 5A, 4A area HS football playoff roundup: Arlington rides strong second half past Abilene Cooper; Bowie, Frisco roll
Arlington 27, Abilene Cooper 20
ARLINGTON — In a game dominated in the first half by strong defenses and an even stronger north wind, Arlington scored three second-half touchdowns on drives of 80, 94 and 70 yards to defeat Abilene Cooper, 27-20, on Friday in a Class 5A Division II area-round playoff game at UT-Arlington’s Maverick Stadium.
Arlington’s winning touchdown came on a 19-yard pass from senior quarterback Connor Huffman to Dontha Robinson with 3:51 remaining. Cooper drove to the Arlington 45 but turned the ball over on downs.
Huffman threw for 307 yards and rushed for 89 yards and a touchdown.
Arlington (10-2) will face the winner of Saturday’s game between Denton Ryan and Cedar Hill.
Arlington’s Isaiah Baker used his height advantage to catch five passes for 179 yards, and running back Brandon Washington carried 22 times for 109 yards and a touchdown for an offense that produced 551 total yards.
Tyler John Tyler 38, Wylie 10
TYLER — Greg Ward passed for 223 yards and two touchdowns, and Tyus Bowser recorded seven sacks as Tyler John Tyler (11-1) routed Wylie (5-7) in a Class 4A Division I area playoff game at Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium.
John Tyler, the No. 2 Class 4A team in the Associated Press state poll, advances to face Frisco (9-3) at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Allen. The win also avenged a 20-16 loss to Wylie in the 2010 state quarterfinals.
John Tyler’s Fred Rose caught a short pass from Ward, shed one tackler, and sprinted 69 yards for a touchdown and a 17-3 halftime lead. Tyler put the game out of reach on its first play of the second half when DeQuante Woods went untouched up the middle for 79 yards.
Woods finished with 104 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries.
Arl. Bowie 31, EP Franklin 14
MIDLAND — Tony James rushed for 146 yards and three touchdowns as Arlington Bowie (11-1) defeated El Paso Franklin (10-2) in a Class 5A Division I area-round matchup at Grande Communications Stadium.
Bowie will face the winner of Saturday’s game between Coppell and DeSoto.
Bowie, which scored 21 first-quarter points, produced 366 yards on the ground. Don Jerry also eclipsed the century mark for Bowie with 114 yards on 24 carries.
Frisco 42, Samuell 7
MESQUITE — Matt Nollman and Ben Cole combined for 275 rushing yards and four touchdowns to lead Frisco (9-3) past Samuell (7-5) in a Class 4A Division I area-round game at Hanby Stadium.
Frisco advances to play Tyler John Tyler in a region semifinal game.
After spotting Samuell a 7-0 lead when Michael Sheffield caught a 72-yard pass from Kamron Jones, Nollman carried the ball five times for 57 yards on a seven-play, scoring drive that was capped by his 8-yard touchdown run. On the ensuing possession, Shane Roberson recovered a Samuell fumble, and Frisco turned it into a three-play, 45-yard scoring drive that ended with the first of Cole’s two touchdowns.
Frisco put the game out of reach in the third quarter, chewing up 9:05 of time and scoring late in the quarter on Dayton Bush’s 11-yard run.
Abilene 53, Arl. Lamar 34
ARLINGTON — Marcell Porter rushed for 226 yards, and Nate Kittley caught two touchdown passes and returned a kickoff for a score as Abilene (12-0) rolled past Arlington Lamar (6-6) in a Class 5-A Division II area-round playoff game at UTA’s Maverick Stadium.
Porter also scored four touchdowns on runs of 2, 14, 14 and 42 yards.
Abilene, which faces the winner of Saturday’s game between Colleyville Heritage and Waco Midway, held a slim 21-20 lead at the half but scored touchdowns on its first five second-half possessions to pull away.
Charlie Baird completed 17 of 23 passes for 250 yards and two touchdowns for Lamar, and Cameron Smith rushed for 131 yards and a touchdown.
Abilene will play the winner of Colleyville Heritage and Waco Midway in a Region I semi-final. That game is tentatively scheduled for 2:00pm next Saturday at Justin Northwest.
Red Oak 28, Sherman 17
ALLEN — Senior quarterback Austin Van Hove threw for two touchdowns and ran for a score to help Red Oak (9-3) beat Sherman (9-3) in a Class 4A Division I area-round matchup.
Red Oak will meet Frisco Centennial in the regional semifinals.
Van Hove spread the ball around, throwing for 143 yards while completing passes to six receivers. Senior Cameron Bausley caught a touchdown pass and ran for a game-high 127 yards and a score. His 19-yard TD run put Red Oak up 21-10 late in the third quarter.
Red Oak’s defense, meanwhile, forced four turnovers and recorded four sacks.
Waco 24, Lake Dallas 21
MIDLOTHIAN — Benjamin Diaz’s 38-yard field goal as time expired gave Waco (9-3) a win over Lake Dallas (7-5) in a Class 4A Division II area-round game.
Leading 21-14 with four minutes left in the fourth quarter, Waco fumbled on Lake Dallas’ 1-yard line, and it was recovered by cornerback Josh Jackson. Lake Dallas drove for the tying touchdown, a 14-yard pass from Marshall Dominy to Jackson, with 36 seconds remaining.
But Adrian Norwood returned the ensuing kickoff to the Lake Dallas 32, setting up Diaz’s heroics.
Waco’s Christian Simms rushed for 161 yards.
Birdville 45, Crowley 21
SOUTHLAKE — Xavier Turner rushed for 196 yards and four touchdowns, and Birdville (12-0) beat Crowley (10-2) in a Class 4A Division I area-round game at Dragon Stadium.
Birdville, which amassed 539 total yards, advances to play Lubbock Monterrey at 2 p.m. Dec. 1 in Wichita Falls.
Turner scored twice on 2-yard runs in the first half as Birdville built a 21-0 lead at the break, and he added a 1-yard scoring run in the third quarter and a 74-yard scamper for a score on the first play of the fourth quarter to make it 35-7.
Larry Cheeks rushed for 183 yards and a touchdown for Crowley.
