Coppell powers past Irving MacArthur, sets stage for huge area matchup with DeSoto in area round
ARLINGTON — Sophomore Charles West rushed for 129 yards and two touchdowns as Coppell defeated Irving MacArthur, 31-7, on Saturday in a Class 5A Division I bi-district playoff game at Cowboys Stadium.
Coppell (11-0) advanced to meet DeSoto (11-0) in an area-round game at 1 p.m. Saturday in Allen.
West’s first 100-yard game including a video highlight of hurdling a tackler at the end of a 15-yard scoring run.
“I saw on video Monday that they tackle low, and I called it then,” West said. “I called it before the game. I said I was going to do it.”
West got a season-high 19 carries as Coppell rested junior Gavin McDaniel, who has multiple injuries including a rolled ankle. West has played regularly since Coppell’s season-opening victory over Longview.
Coppell methodically put away MacArthur (7-4) with its power-oriented style. West added a 34-yard touchdown run on a toss sweep, senior quarterback Colby Mahon had a 1-yard sneak for a touchdown and fullback Luke Jenner caught a 15-yard pass for a score.
MacArthur’s zone-read offense totaled 260 yards, didn’t have a turnover and punted only twice. Quarterback Tyler Petrillo had 20 carries for 108 yards and running back Jourdan McNeill had 20 for 73 yards, but MacArthur’s only score came on a 2-yard scoring run by McNeill late in the first half.
Coppell is rebounding from a non-playoff season and suffered a tragedy in October with the drowning death of senior player Jacob Logan. Coppell players wear Logan’s No. 21 on their helmets.
“What the kids have been through, they know to take advantage of every opportunity they get,” coach Joe McBride said. “They know to enjoy it.”
