West Mesquite rallies from 21 down to beat Mesquite Poteet; both in playoffs
Huge comeback fuels win as both teams advance to playoffs
MESQUITE — West Mesquite overcame a big deficit in the second half to defeat Mesquite Poteet, 45-31, for the eighth year in a row Friday night in a District 10-4A game at Mesquite Memorial Stadium.
Both teams advanced to the Class 4A Region II playoffs. West Mesquite (8-2, 6-1) will face Frisco Centennial (9-1) at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 16 at Murphy’s Tom Kimbrough Stadium in a Division I matchup, while Poteet (8-2, 5-2) will take on District 9-4A’s Little Elm (5-5) at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 16 at Standridge Stadium in Carrollton.
Poteet had a lead as large as 28-7 in the first half and led 28-17 at halftime before West Mesquite started to take control of the game.
West Mesquite outscored Poteet 28-3 in the second half, paced by two touchdown catches by Jakeelin Hankins for 19 and 24 yards, respectively. His 24-yard touchdown grab from quarterback Chason Virgil gave West Mesquite its first lead of the game, 38-31, with 40 seconds left in the third quarter.
Running back Raashaan Reason found a big hole up the middle for a 39-yard touchdown run with 3:55 remaining in the game for the game’s final points.
Poteet’s final shot at a rally fizzled on the following kickoff as it fumbled it back to West Mesquite, which ran out the clock to secure the victory.
Virgil finished the night by completing 17 of 28 pass attempts for 226 yards and three touchdowns for West Mesquite, while Reason ran 19 times for 109 yards and a touchdown.
Poteet’s offense found good success in the first half but was largely shut down in the second. Quarterback Tanner Ramsey completed 15 of 25 pass attempts for 180 yards, three touchdowns and an interception.
