South Grand Prairie coach Brent Whitson: District 7-5A 'closest thing you’re going to get to the SEC West'

South Grand Prairie coach Brent Whitson has seen his team play four straight playoff contenders.

It reminds him a bit of of a college division – one that’s produced the last three national champions.

“Our district is the closest thing you’re going to get to the SEC West,” Whitson said. “We had a big win Friday (over Mansfield Timberview) but we’ve got another one just as big this Friday with Midlothian.”

DeSoto, Cedar Hill and Midlothian are ranked No. 1, No. 12 and No. 20 in our Class 5A Area Rankings. Four teams are tied are at 2-2 as they battle it out for the final two playoff spots. There’s certainly parity and some top-ranked talent, but are they really the closest thing to the SEC West? (I’m assuming Whitson meant after the SEC East…and every other collegiate division/conference)

If so, who would be which 7-5A team is each SEC West team? (Yes, I know one college team will have to be represented by two 7-5A teams).

Going straight by ranking, DeSoto would probably be Alabama.

Alabama hasn’t been tied late in the third like DeSoto was to Midlothian, but DeSoto’s explosion in the fourth was Alabama like.

“We’re 0-0 with DeSoto with three minutes to go in the first half,” Whitson said. “DeSoto will let you do that, it’s just after a while they thrown on Superman’s cape and that’s it.”

Uh Coach? Records indicate Superman never played in the SEC.
