5A roundup (Week 7): First-half surge fuels Bowie rout; Colleyville Heritage, Martin roll

ARLINGTON — Arlington Bowie compiled more than 300 total yards of offense in the first half and led 42-14 at halftime on the way to a 63-35 victory over Arlington Lamar on Friday night at Wilemon Field.

Bowie (6-1, 4-0 District 3-5A) led 63-21 going into the fourth quarter.

Quarterback Tony James accounted for four touchdowns — three passing and one rushing. He also completed 17 of 25 passes for 250 yards. Don Jerry rushed 15 times for 87 yards and two touchdowns and caught a 44-yard touchdown pass.

Lamar (3-4, 2-2) was led by quarterback Gene Visor, who completed seven of 11 passes for 68 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed for 94 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries.

Cody Thomas passed for 239 yards and three touchdowns in the first half for Colleyville Heritage.

Colleyville Heritage scored on its first five possessions, including a 12-yard pitch and catch from Thomas to Kaelin Deboskie early in the second quarter, which gave Colleyville Heritage a 27-8 lead.

After recovering the ensuing onside kick, Thomas tossed his third touchdown of the night — a 34-yarder to DeMarco Corbin. Thomas did not play in the second half with Heritage up by 33 points at halftime.

Corbin also had a big night, rushing for 87 yards and three touchdowns.

ARLINGTON — Kyle Hicks rushed for 82 yards and two scores as Arlington Martin dominated the District 3-5A matchup at Cravens Field.

Martin senior Ben Grogan kicked six field goals, including three of over 50 yards.

Trevor Stewart recovered a fumble in the end zone on the ensuing kickoff as Martin took a 14-0 lead seven seconds later. North Crowley attempted to return the kickoff out of the end zone but fumbled.

North Crowley (1-6, 1-3) cut the deficit to 17-7 with 3:18 remaining in the first quarter on Given Tippins-Hill’s 11-yard touchdown pass to E.J. Speed.

Martin (5-2, 4-0) went ahead 28-7 with 6:18 remaining in the second quarter when Vincent Hall scored on a 13-yard run.

FLOWER MOUND — Flower Mound Marcus recorded its sixth consecutive win in the Battle of the Axe.

Marcus (2-5, 1-1 District 5-5A) went ahead 17-0 at halftime but led 24-21 with just over five minutes left to play.

Marcus got a pair of big third-down conversions from quarterback Ryan Vaughn to help run out the clock.

Vaughn, making his first start of the year, threw for 126 yards. Tailback Wyatt Verret ran for 195 yards and two touchdowns on 36 carries.

Lewisville (1-6, 0-2) outscored Marcus 21-7 in the second half to climb back in the contest as quarterback Matt McDougal threw for 193 yards and two touchdowns.

DENTON — With three seconds left in the game, Hebron junior quarterback Carson Proffitt took the fourth-and-long snap and ran backward to end the game. When he was downed, there was one second left after the clock was started late.

After a lengthy consultation, the referees called the game instead of giving Denton Ryan (3-3, 1-1) one play from Hebron’s 14-yard line.

Following a scoreless first quarter, Hebron (4-3, 1-1) only had one second-quarter possession, but scored 14 points. The Hawks scored on Proffitt’s 14-yard touchdown pass to tight end Riley Ransom.

Linebacker Gavin Buford then intercepted Ryan’s Mitchell Bridges and returned it 31 yards for a touchdown.

KELLER — Keller Fossil Ridge (2-5, 2-2 District 4-5A) held Keller Central (4-3, 2-2) without a first down in the first half in its win at Keller ISD Athletic Complex.

Cody Seidel kicked a 36-yard field goal, and Jacob Gnacinski threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Adonis Ramos to give Fossil Ridge a 10-0 lead in the first quarter. Chaylon Bowman added a 2-yard touchdown run as Fossil Ridge led 17-0 at halftime.

IRVING — Running back Jourdan McNeill had 30 carries for 165 yards and five touchdowns to lead Irving MacArthur.

MacArthur’s defense held Nimitz (2-5, 1-3) to 142 yards offense and five first downs.

The score was tied 13-13 in the second quarter, but MacArthur (4-3, 2-2) controlled the game the rest of the way.

ARLINGTON — Connor Huffman threw four touchdowns passes as Arlington (6-1, 3-1 District 3-5A) defeated Arlington Sam Houston (2-5, 1-3) at Maverick Stadium.

Huffman spread the ball around to eight receivers for 289 yards. The senior had scoring strikes of 92, 2, 25 and 37 yards to push his season total to 16 touchdowns passes.

Brandon Washington led Arlington with 145 yards rushing. Trae Swift paced Arlington Sam Houston with 171 yards.

Richardson Berkner running back Calvin Jones rushed for 342 yards and four touchdowns, including three in the second half, in a 50-37 comeback win over Richardson Pearce on Friday at Wildcat-Ram Stadium.

Jones had touchdown runs of 59, 62, 69 yards and 16 yards. Jedidiah Louis added 102 yards and one touchdown on 16 carries to lead Berkner (3-4, 2-2 District 9-5A) to its second straight win, while overcoming a 21-17 halftime deficit.

Gjordan Dumas carried 24 times for 161 yards and four touchdowns for Pearce (1-6, 1-3). Jeoffrey Nwarie added 209 yards on 27 carries.

CEDAR HILL — Laquvionte Gonzalez scored four touchdowns in the first half as Cedar Hill (4-3, 3-1 7-5A) overwhelmed Grand Prairie in its homecoming game.

Gonzalez barely played into the second quarter except when he was used as a punter. He had 129 yards on just seven carries. Cedar Hill finished with 635 yards of total offense.

Before the game, Cedar Hill graduate Jason Richardson, who won the silver medal in the 110-meter hurdles in the London Summer Olympics, was honored in a short ceremony before the coin toss. He then led the Longhorns out onto the field.

MESQUITE — Mesquite opened a 20-point lead after one period and never looked back on the way to a rout of rival North Mesquite at Memorial Stadium. Mesquite (8-0, 4-0 12-5A) beat its crosstown rival for the eighth time in the last nine meetings and took a 23-19-1 lead in the series.

Alex Cooper passed for 263 yards and two scores in addition to a pair of rushing scores in just one half as Mesquite took a 42-3 lead at the break. Cooper completed 17 of 23 passes, including eight passes to Rashard Higgins, who finished with 110 yards and a touchdown of 18 yards. Tyson Reed rushed for a game-high 108 yards and two touchdowns.

MANSFIELD — Mansfield’s Lane Meyer threw for three touchdowns in a win over Duncanville Friday night.

Duncanville (2-5, 1-3 7-5A) took a 8-7 lead on a 68-yard touchdown pass from Aaron Piper to Jaquan Cook in the second quarter. Mansfield (4-3, 2-2) then scored 30 unanswered points when Chad Whitener caught a 3-yard pass from Meyer. Julius Lewis scored on a 30-yard run. Meyer hit Lance Evans on an end zone fade from 15 yards out, and Ryan LeRoy ran for a 5-yard score.

MESQUITE — Quarterback Destri White accounted for 327 total yards and two touchdowns as Mesquite Horn defeated Longview. Dezmond Chumley threw for 173 yards, and Dorian Leonard had six receptions for 120 yards and a touchdown to lead the Longview offense. Ahead by two points late in the game, Mesquite Horn recovered a fumble in Longview territory. Jarrison Stewart scored seven plays later.

GRAND PRAIRIE — South Grand Prairie rallied from two touchdowns down in the fourth quarter to defeat Mansfield Timberview at the Gopher-Warrior Bowl.

South Grand Prairie quarterback Elijah Wright engineered three scoring drives in the fourth quarter. He capped two of the drives with runs of 3 and 1 yard. He also scored from 1 yard out in the third quarter.

RICHARDSON — Richardson defensive back Kimbrick Jones’ 74-yard interception return for a touchdown thwarted W.T. White’s potential game-winning drive with 39 seconds remaining to seal Richardson’s win at Eagle-Mustang Stadium.

In a game that saw the lead change nine times, W.T. White (2-5, 1-3 9-5A) marched 38 yards into field goal range when Jones intercepted Chris Rabroker’s pass into the flat. Rabroker finished with 262 yards passing and three touchdowns.

Richardson (3-4, 3-1) used a power rushing attack to gain 497 yards. Quarterback Parker Smith led the way with 226 yards and four rushing touchdowns. Devante Branch and Kendrick Igbinoba also broke the century mark in rushing with 174 and 100 yards, respectively. All seven of Richardson’s offensive scores came on the ground.
