Kickoff return sparks Frisco Centennial in 24-20 win over Wakeland

FRISCO — In a blossoming rivalry, Frisco Centennial got a momentum turning 65-yard kickoff return to spark a fourth-quarter rally to beat Frisco Wakeland 24-20 victory at FC Dallas Stadium.

Centennial (6-1, 3-1 in District 9-4A) had lost its lead when senior Cydney Calvin took a kick return to Wakeland’s 16-yard line. Centennial pulled within 20-17 on a 27-yard field goal by Austin Shoemake. Centennial took the lead for good on a 6-yard scoring run by junior running back Kamari Burnett, but it was Calvin’s return which rejuvenated Centennial after Wakeland had taken a second-half lead with two scores in 1½ minutes.

“We needed a big play, and I have to trust myself to do it when I get the ball,” Calvin said. “I always think I can do it. I have to believe I can. I saw it open up. I thought I might take it all the way.”

Centennial and Wakeland (5-2, 2-2) had split the first four meetings. Only one meeting has been decided by more than a touchdown. Centennial won 17-15 last season.

“That’s the way our games have gone,” Centennial coach Mark Howard said. “One side, get the momentum and the other side has to get it. Cydney’s return was a big swing for us.”

Wakeland took a 20-14 lead after trailing 14-7 at halftime. Junior running back Tyler Carver (6-0, 230) scored on a 1-yard run to tie the score at 14. Centennial fumbled the kickoff, and Carver rolled in from 2-yards to give Wakeland a 20-14 lead; the PAT attempt failed.

Centennial relied on speedy senior quarterback Lamar Jordan, who keyed a 60-yard go-ahead drive by running for 25 yards on three carries and passing to receiver Stoney Hawkins for another 13. Burnet made it 24-20 on his 6-yard run.

Baylor commit defensive lineman Kevin Smith sacked Wakeland quarterback Jacob Lamb on fourth down at midfield to end Wakeland’s hopes of a comeback.

Centennial junior Kelly Cordova caught and passed for a touchown in the first half. Cordova’s juggling catch on third-down set up his 1-yard touchdown reception from Jordan. Cordova threw a halfback pass 34-yards yards to Cody Bagwell to take a 14-7 lead.
