Now we finally know, oficially, that Cowboys Stadium will be the host of this year’s UIL championship football games.
The games the last two seasons drew large crowds, with a combined attendance of more than 101,000 for the final day of 2010 and 2011. But I always thought the crowds could be even bigger — if certain teams were involved.
Teams with huge followings.
Locally, that would include teams such as Allen, Southlake Carroll and Euless Trinity. But I think any team from the Dallas-Fort Worth area will bring a big load of fans to Cowboys Stadium. There will also be a lot of local fans who will attend the games regardless of the teams involved.
What will really maximize the crowd, I think, are the championship teams from other parts of the state. Katy, which has a tremendous football tradition and a huge fan base that will travel across the state to see the team, would be a huge draw. Katy is No. 1 in the 5A state rankings and could end up in the 5A Division I or II bracket.
Some other schools from around the state with huge followings that could help fill up Cowboys Stadium on the last weekend before Christmas:
