Corbett Smith's notable Week 3 HS football games, predictions

All games Friday at 7:30 p.m. unless noted

Cedar Hill vs. DeSoto

Eagle Stadium: The Battle of Belt Line should bring a packed house in DeSoto, as always, but this season's rivalry game carries more significance than in recent games. DeSoto moves back into the same district as Cedar Hill, and the game is the 7-5A district opener. DeSoto (3-0) looked impressive in its 42-21 win over Euless Trinity last Saturday. Its backfield duo of quarterback Desmon White and running back Dontre Wilson accounted for six touchdowns, while linebacker Taylor Young recovered a fumble and intercepted a pass. Cedar Hill (1-2), on the other hand, has struggled to stop anyone over the last two weeks, allowing 77 points and 890 yards combined to Allen and Miami (Fla.) Booker T. Washington. Quarterback Damion Hobbs (Arkansas State) will need to have a big game for Cedar Hill to pull an upset. DeSoto 56, Cedar Hill 35

Gopher-Warrior Bowl: The 5-8, 175-pound Burks has rushed for 676 yards and eight touchdowns in three games, so it's no surprise that he is at the top of the area 5A rushing leaders. That should continue. He's a powerful runner who was productive last season — rushing for 1,885 yards and 23 touchdowns — and he comes from a system that isn't afraid to utilize a star running back. Stanford's Stepfan Taylor and Iowa's Damon Bullock both showcased their talents at the school. Burks, though, doesn't have an FBS offer at this point, and could end up as this year's Cameron Washington — the under-recruited Corsicana running back who rushed for 3,136 yards in 2011 and signed with Lamar. Mansfield (2-1) has bounced back nicely from a season-opening loss to Arlington Bowie, largely on the shoulders of the senior running back. Over the last two weeks, Burks has rushed for at least 200 yards and two touchdowns in wins over Keller and Mansfield Summit. Mansfield 48, South Grand Prairie 28

Tiger Stadium, 7 p.m. Thursday, Ch. 21, KAND-AM (1340)

Waxahachie (1-1) turned its early-season fortunes around quickly, bouncing back from a 42-7 loss to Midlothian to shut out West Mesquite, 42-0, last week. Corsicana (1-2) will need more from QB DeVontay Bell, who's completing only 31 percent of his passes. Waxahachie 35, Corsicana 28

Hebron at Allen

In 2010, Hebron (2-1) gave Allen its first home district loss in five seasons. Things have changed for Allen (3-0) — no longer in the same stadium or district. Allen has outscored its opponents 31-0 in the first quarter. Allen 42, Hebron 21

Mesquite at Plano West

John Clark Stadium

Stellar QB play has propelled Mesquite (3-0) up the SportsDayHS area rankings; Alex Cooper has completed at least 75 percent of his passes in the three wins. RBs Sotonya Jamabo and Auston Anderson both rushed for more than 100 yards last week for Plano West (2-1). Mesquite 28, Plano West 17

Plano East at FM Marcus
