LANCASTER — Kenneth Author threw two touchdown passes and ran for a score to lead South Oak Cliff to a 32-13 victory in the Lone Star Football Classic.
Devin Williams and Anthony Smith were the other offensive stars for SOC (1-0). Williams ran for 181 yards and a touchdown, and Smith had two TD receptions.
SOC’s Abel Luviano made field goals of 40 and 38 yards, and linebacker Richard Franklin made 12 tackles.
Lancaster 35, Fort Worth Nolan 21
LANCASTER -- Lancaster quarterback Demarcus Ayers rushed for a touchdown, passed for one and caught a pass for another in a dynamic debut in the nightcap of Saturday's Lone Star Sports Football Classic, leading Lancaster the Tigers to a 35-21 victory over Fort Worth Nolan at Beverly D. Humphrey Stadium.
Lancaster (1-0) rushed for 270 yards, highlighed by a 182-yard effort and two touchdowns by Ayers. Ayers also tossed a 26-yard score to Nick Harvey and later hauled in a 34-yard scoring catch from Harvey.
Lancaster never trailed, scoring on the third play of the game and rolling to a 21-7 halftime lead. Lancaster's other offensive score came on an 18-yard run by Roderick Needum midway through the third quarter.
Fort Worth Nolan rushed for 225 yards, led by Cameron Elias' 118 yards and two touchdowns.Melissa 18, Celina 13
ALLEN -- Chris Smith lofted a 9-yard touchdown pass to J.C. Cottrell in the corner of the end zone with seven seconds remaining as Melissa (1-0) handed Celina (0-1) an 18-13 defeat at Eagle Stadium.
Smith was 10-for-27 for 127 yards passing while Cottrell finished with four receptions for 35 yards and one touchdown.
Melissa, the 2011 state champion in Class 2A Division I playing its first game in Class 3A, led 10-0 at halftime, getting a 23-yard field goal from Walker Montoya and a 10-yard run from Kyle Morgan.
Celina scored on two of its first three possesions in the third quarter, getting an 11-yard run from Justin Leshowitz and a 3-yard run from Nathan Elliott to take a 13-12 lead into the fourth quarter.
With just over two minutes remaining, Celina looked poised to close the game out.
However, Elliott was sacked for a 13-yard loss on a 4th-and-goal from the Melissa 10-yard line. Melissa took over at its 24 and marched 76 yards for the winning score.
The crucial play in the drive was a pass interference call on Celina inside the red zone that gave Melissa a first-and-goal from the Celina 9. Melissa scored two plays after that penalty.
Elliott completed 14-of-26 for 148 yards and one interception. He also rushed for 40 yards on 14 carries with one touchdown. Marcus Ellis had 94 yards rushing on 12 carries for Melissa, and Melissa's Jackson Webb had three receptions for 52 yards.
