10) Mansfield Summit
Notables: Summit finished the 2011 season 10-2, including a 7-0 mark in district en route to the 7-4A title...Summit returns four starters on offense and five on defense...QB Ryan Cuevas (2,221 passing yards, 20 TDs, 6 INTs, 515 rushing yards, 4 TDs), DL Bryson Henderson (75 tackles, 9 sacks, 7-4A defensive MVP), DB T.J. Johnson (first-team all district) and LB Quan Matthews (83 tackles, first-team all district) are back for Summit in 2012...Season opener is Aug. 31 (Friday) against Mansfield Timberview at 7:30 p.m.
Notables: Kimball finished the 2011 season 9-3 and made the playoffs as the third seed out of District 11-4A...Plenty of familiar names are back for Kimball as it returns seven starters on offense and five on defense...Some notable names back for 2012 include QB Traveon Thibodeaux, leading rusher Teriyon Gipson (933 yards, 12 TDs), leading receiving Prentavious Morehead (761 receiving yards, 11 TDs) and DL Justin Manning (scholarship offers from nearly 20 BCS schools).
8) Frisco Wakeland
Notables: Returns most of its defense, including a pair of potential stars in the secondary: seniors Josh Harris and Kevin Williams. Harris made 94 tackles last season and Kevin Williams made 95. Senior LB Dalton Walls had 78 tackles last season. ... On offense, Wakeland must replace QB Nick West, but senior WR Turner Smiley could be the big-play guy. The 6-0, 175-pounder had 40 catches for 663 yards and 6 TDs last season. Junior RB Tyler Carver rushed for 618 yards and 15 TDs last year.
Notables: Lancaster finished the 2011 season 9-3 and tied for second place in District 15-4A. ... Coach Chris Gilbert has made a vow to make his best players into two-way starters. ... Junior Nick Harvey (336 passing yards, 5 TD, 4 INTs) and senior DeMarcus Ayers (4 TD passes, 6 TD catches) will alternate at QB and WR, as well as play DB. ... Texas pledge Daeshon Hall (6-6, 225) will play both TE and DE, where he had 60 tackles and 11 sacks in 2011. ... Other standouts include seniors DB Dakota Austin, DE/OT George Ramos, and RB Joseph Paden, as well as junior WR Nick Alexander (who picked up an offer from Oklahoma last week).
Notables: Waxahachie finished the 2011 season 9-3 and was co-District 15-4A champions. ... The Indians return seven players who received first- or second-team all-district honors last season. ... WRs Terrance Hawkins (48 catches, 890 yards, 9 TDs) and brothers Quinn Sargent (594 receiving yards, 7 TDs) and Quin Sargent (484 receiving yards, 2 TDs) give the Indians a threat down the field. QB is a question mark, with no one returning who completed a pass in 2011. JV QB Jake Villarreal, freshman Avery Johnson or Quin Sargent could see time as the starter. ... Interior line play should be a strength, with C Jacob Aguilar and G Gennard Johnson. ... Craig Renfro, an second-team all-district DE last season, will split time at RB with Treyvon Hughes.
5) Frisco Centennial
Notables: Frisco Centennial finished the 2011 season 12-1 and won District 9-4A...Centennial returns four starters on offense including starting QB Lamar Jordan, the 9-4A offensive MVP who threw for 2,455 yards, ran for 955 yards and scored 35 total TDs...Centennial's defense returns five starters including DE KJ Smith (school's record holder for sacks), first-team all-district DB Ranthony Texada, first-team all-district LB Jordan Miller and first-team all-district safety Ian Neithercut.
4) Wylie East
Notables: Wylie East finished the 2011 season 8-3 and in third place in District 10-4A. ... In its second varsity season, the Raiders made the 4A Division II playoffs, falling to Frisco in the first round on a late two-point conversion. ... Six starters on offense and defense are back. Depending on the play of a completely new line, the offense has the chance to be one of the best in the area. Junior QB Garrett McCain is back, with a deep complement of receivers: Oklahoma State pledge WR Marcell Ateman (1,047 receiving yards, 10 TDs), Baylor pledge WR Quan Jones (420 yards, 4 TDs) and TE Jesse Brubaker. East's top two RBs return as well: Jabari Anderson (2,144 rushing yards, 28 TDs) and Kevon Mack (922 yards, 8 TDs). ... There's good depth on the defensive line, with Luis Laren, Carlos Weathersby, Will McCarthy and Javier Clark all in the rotation. Chase Eckles and Henry Dues return at linebacker, and three are back in the secondary - Tieric Bible, Mian Wilson and Jordan Wyatt. ... Coach Joe Lepsis said his team is thin on numbers. To be able to have enough depth, he will look to play most of its stars both ways - including Ateman and Anderson.
3) West Mesquite
Notables: West Mesquite finished the 2011 season 5-6 and tied for fourth place in District 15-4A...The Wranglers don't have too many holes to fill as it returns seven starters on offense and seven more on defense... Senior safety Kameron Miles, last year's District 15-4A Defensive MVP, returns after a season in which he had five interceptions. The defense also returns Dimarya Mixon, a 6-3, 255-pound senior lineman who was an all-district selection last year, as well as a pair of excellent linebackers: seniors Nick Akins and Darryl Battles. The offense will have a fantastic playmaker, Eldridge Massington, a 6-3, 195-pound senior receiver who was all-district last year. Massington, who had 41 receptions for 666 yards and six touchdowns last season, has orally committed to USC.
2) Highland Park
Notables: Highland Park finished the 2011 season 12-1 and won District 10-4A... As usual the Scots will have a large group of seniors moving into starting roles this season. HP will have an anchor on the offensive line in William Barns, a 6-3, 260-pound senior who was all-district last season...It has a leader in the secondary in senior Hayden Greer, and a leader at linebacker in senior Guy Tom Kellogg, a starter as a sophomore who suffered a broken leg in last year's opener...Senior Bryce Green and junior Tanner Houghton add to the strength at linebacker...Senior Charles Hubbard is the leading returning receiver with 37 catches for 402 yards and a touchdown last season. Highland Park's starting QB is expected to be Jet Tuma, a 6-2,190-pound senior who led the junior varsity in 2011.
1) Denton Guyer
Notables: Guyer finished the 2011 season 8-4 and tied for second in District 7-5A... One of the area's top sophomores from a year ago, dual-threat quarterback Jerrod Heard, returns for his junior season after putting up 2,286 yards and 28 touchdowns in 2011... Heard will have one of his favorite receivers back as well, as Ellis Jefferson (6-4, 200) returns for his senior season. He was second on the team last year with 676 receiving yards... For the upcoming year, there will be an entirely new group of starters on the defensive line as Connor Allen, Ian Kies, Dominic Pickering and converted tight end Thomas Ferguson will hope to continue Guyer's tradition of stopping the run.
